William “ Bill ” H . Duling , passed away peacefully on Monday , September 4th , 2023 .
Bill wore many titles , husband , dad , grandpa , stepdad , brother , son , and friend . He was known for his sense of humor , kindness , and generosity to all those with whom he came in contact . He will be dearly missed by all .
Bill was born the youngest of three children to Omeda “ Alice ” Duling ( Nèe Roahrig ) and Joel William Duling in Coshocton , Ohio on June 21 , 1929 . Bill went to Plainfield School , Plainfield , Ohio and he would often attend school reunions as years passed . He attended Ohio State University and studied Dairy Technology before joining the Army , serving during the Korean War , and then moving on to the Air Force Reserves . He had a long and successful career in sales and was still running his business Duling Displays Inc , in Sarasota , Fl . until March of 2023 . was a long-time member of Edgewood Country Club in Commerce TWP , Michigan and later a member of Meadows Country Club in Sarasota , FL .
He was preceded in death by his parents , his brother Wayne Alton Duling and his beloved sister Matilda “ sis ” Porteus , his precious grandson William Alton Duling , his beautiful daughter Kim Janzen and stepson Todd Houston , along with many other dear family member and lifelong
friends .
He is survived by his wife of 36 years , Susan E . Duling ( nèe Frey ) of Sarasota Florida , son Joel Duling and daughter-inlaw Lynette of Richland , Washington . His son-in-law Scott Janzen of Fresno , CA . His mother-in-law , Irene Frey ( Nèe Neff ) of Springfield , Ohio . His stepchildren Maria ( Jesus ) Nava of Dallas , TX , Jennifer ( Kurt ) Traugott of Cooksburg , PA and Tony Houston of Sarasota FL . Grand children Matt Murbach , Whitney ( Alex ) Butin , Laine ( James ) Bengston , Luke ( NIkki ) Janzen , Harrison Duling , Jenna Duling , Armando Nava , Franny Nava , Gus Traugott , Elizabeth Traugott , Evangeline Traugott , Lucy Traugott , Ajay Houston , Brit Houston , Allyson Houston , and Andrew Houston . Five great grandchildren and many dearly loved nieces and nephews .
A grave side service will be held at 11:30 AM , September 25th , 2023 at Sarasota National Cemetery , 9810 State Road 72 , Sarasota , FL . A private celebration of life will be held at a later date .
Terrie Mikesell Shannon , 80 , of Duluth , Minnesota , passed away peacefully on September 26 at home , surrounded by family . Terrie grew up on a farm in New Guilford , Ohio where she learned the value of hard work at an early age . Her love of learning began early in life , when as a youngster she eagerly awaited arrival of the bookmobile every month . She remained an avid reader for the rest of her life and had just started William Kent Krueger ’ s new book at the time of her passing .
She attended Union School , then went on to get a degree in Home Economics at The Ohio State University . After teaching in Wooster , Ohio for several years , she attended Cornell University , where she earned a PhD in Education and met her future husband , Lyle Shannon . She was subsequently hired as an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth ( UMD ), where she worked for 41 years . During those years she taught many classes and served as a Department Head and an Associate Dean of the College of Education . Her first love , though , was always working with students and supporting their efforts inside and

outside the classroom .
Terrie was a huge supporter of UMD women ’ s athletics and loved to watch her students compete in hockey , volleyball and basketball . She developed lasting friendships with many of them .
Terrie was a strong proponent of equality and a powerful advocate for women , minorities , indigenous peoples and refugees . She worked right up until her death to help a group of Afghan refugees resettle in Duluth .
She miraculously survived an initial battle with Stage IV lung cancer , after she was initially given 6 months to live . She ultimately had 7 1 / 2 additional
years of life , during which her greatest joy was spending time with her new ( and only !) grandson . She also spent those years helping others - first , sewing hundreds of cloth bags for people to use instead of plastic at the grocery store , then , sewing thousands of masks which she distributed to hospitals , friends and school children during the COVID epidemic and finally working to resettle Afghan refugees .
Terrie was preceded in death by her father , Carl , her mother , Mary , and her sister Rosa Lea Stevens ( Joe Sperry ). She is survived by her husband Lyle , son Ben ( Dana ), grandson Magnus , and brothers Wirt Mikesell and Leslie Mikesell ( Jill ). Nieces Lee Williamson ( Gail ), Sarah Mintus ( Patrick ), Lisa Stevens Rowan ( Robert ), and nephews Craig Stevens ( Sharon ), Paul Mikesell ( Sarah ), and Chad Mikesell ( Sarah ).
In lieu of flowers , people are encouraged to make a donation to the 2nd Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank or the Duluth Public Library Every Child Ready Program .
A celebration of life will be held at Peace Church in Duluth at a date to be announced later .
