A consortium including Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center ( MVESC ), Ohio Valley ESC , East Central Ohio ESC , Franklin University , Washington State College of Ohio , and Zane State College , was awarded $ 1,750,000 by the Appalachian Regional Commission ( ARC ) to train and retain teachers in coal-impacted communities in southeastern Ohio .

This grant is part of a $ 68.2 million package supporting 65 projects across 188 counties through ARC ’ s POWER ( Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization ) Initiative , which helps diversify economies in coalimpacted areas .

MVESC , as part of the consortium , will collaborate to offer high school students the chance to earn 30 College Credit Plus ( CCP ) credits in education , gain apprenticeship experience in local districts , and progress from community college to a bachelor ’ s . The project aims to produce 27 licensed educators who will teach more than 675 students

This program will not only benefit our students but also strengthen the communities where they will live and work .”

Since the POWER Initiative ’ s launch in 2015 , ARC has invested more than $ 484.7 million in 564 projects , helping create or retain nearly 54,000 jobs and preparing 170,000 workers and students for new opportunities .
