Lady Bears alumni basketball game planned for Nov . 16

By Josie Sellers For The Beacon
Kortnee Mickle is using her senior project to organize a girls alumni basketball game at River View High School .
“ I always wanted to do it ,” said Mickle , who is a junior at RVHS . “ Once I graduate , I know I ’ ll want to play basketball maybe a couple more times . I feel most people would want to do that too .”
The River View Girls Basketball Alumni Game will be held Saturday , Nov . 16 at 6:30 p . m . at the school .
“ I want to give people the chance to meet up again and visit with those they haven ’ t seen since graduation ,” Mickle said .
Alumni will be recognized at halftime , and even those who can ’ t play are encouraged to come and show their support . There will be a small gift for the person or people who are from the oldest class . Donations will be accepted for entry , and there will be a small concession stand . Proceeds from the event will go toward new uniforms .
Former Lady Bears can register for the game by visiting the River View Lady Bears Alumni Game Facebook page .
“ We don ’ t want to say no to anyone , but you do have to sign up in advance to get a shirt ,” Mickle said .
There are currently 10 ladies signed up for the game .
“ Depending on how many we get , we might have them scrimmage the girls , or we will mix the teams up with the youngest and oldest players ,” said Renina Brenly , RVHS varsity girls basketball
coach and Mickle ’ s project mentor . “ We want to have lots of subs .”
They hope to make this an annual event .
“ I think it ’ s great to get alumni to come back and for them to share their experiences ,” Brenly said . “ Kortnee also is getting to understand what it ’ s like to organize an event , the time commitment that takes and about staying on top of things .”
According to senior project coordinator Cindy Hemming , Mickle ’ s project is one of a little more than 70 this year .
“ I had to cut it off ,” Hemming said . “ Lots of kids are finding their passion and knowing what they want to do as a project . They also realize it looks good on a college application . Some colleges give them community service credit for doing them too .”
Brenly encourages all past Lady Bears to come celebrate girls basketball .
“ Even if you don ’ t want to play , you can still sign up so we can do halftime introductions ,” she said . “ All the past players in attendance who come to show their support will be introduced .”
