ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
We have had a fun and event filled start to our school year !
October has been very busy for us . The Elementary enjoyed three wonderful days with our grandparents in early October . Kids loved seeing familiar faces and we had around 600 guests over the course of the three days . In addition , the Scholastic book fair was open throughout the same week and was very successful . We love to see the kids get excited about books !
The Columbus Zoo brought some animals to us for the students to see and learn about . Also , the author , Michelle Houts , came to visit the elementary school , providing a presentation tailored to each individual grade level . Following her grade level presentations at school , she conducted an interactive literacy night for elementary students and their families that evening . In November , we will have our Harvest Parties and celebrate Veterans Day .

CKLA Curriculum River View Local School District started the year out with a brand new curriculum , and RVES has fully embraced it ! Amplify CKLA is a core curriculum for K – 5 ELA . It is a language arts program that combines a multi-sensory approach to phonics with rich texts carefully sequenced to build content knowledge . Students participate in one hour of “ Skills ” and one hour of “ Knowledge ” everyday in Grades K-3 . The Skills strand of the Core Knowledge Language Arts program teaches students the decoding skills needed for ( future ) independent reading . Each Skills lesson begins with a warm-up , reviewing previously taught content in reading , writing , and / or grammar . All reading times consist of a story preview , presentation , and discussion . The Knowledge strand is designed to help students build the background knowledge and vocabulary critical to listening and reading comprehension . Through introducing , presenting , and discussing read-alouds in each domain , teachers build students ’ listening and reading comprehension along with oral language skills . After a grade level completes a knowledge domain they have a fun culminating event . These events take things that they have learned throughout the domain and they have a celebration over those things . Kindergarten recently finished up their fi rst knowledge domain and had a celebration based on many of the Nursery Rhymes and fables they have learned . Then they started learning about the fi ve senses . First grade had their event before fall break and celebrated their knowledge of fables and have recently started learning about the human body . Second grade students celebrated tall tales and are currently learning about early asian civilizations . The students are very interested in the topics that are being introduced to them , and they are fi nding out that learning can be fun too !
