Head Start organized its Fall Family Literacy Night

Coshocton Head Start hosted a Fall Family Literacy Night on Oct . 17 at its Hilltop site . The school grounds and inside the building were decorated in a fall theme . Coshocton Fire Department brought one of its fire trucks , and there were plenty of games on the grounds , as well as face painting , a photo-op and lots of books to give away .
“ We have all of our classes , not only from our Hilltop site , but our career center and our West Lafayette site ,” said Amber Manbeck , enrollment manager and family and community partnership manager . “ We all come together and do one big event for all of our children . Plus , their siblings and parents could come . They all get a book

and some freebies as they come through .
“ We have additional community resources here . The library brought books for kindergarten readiness . First Step is here providing awareness for Domestic Violence Month . CareSource has resources for families ,
and children get to take home a pumpkin . We have face painting , a scarecrow and all the fun activities we do in the fall . It ’ s going to be a fun fall night . Dinner inside tonight is chili , fruit cups , juice boxes and cider .”
Literacy Night is celebrated

“ We do it four times a year because we want to increase literacy within our community , within our children and our families ,” Manbeck said . “ We incorporate literacy as much as we can for every event . We are teaching a variety of things when it comes to literacy , not just letter recognition or pronunciation of sounds , but also how to read a book , what is the front cover called , what are the side covers called , what is the spine and all of the little things like how to point when you read .
“ When you are teaching them at a young age , hitting on all those developmental milestones are all really important to learn . Our children are ages 0-5 . The ones starting in the classroom are 6 months to 3 years old in our Early Head Start program and

3-5 in our Head Start program . We serve a lot of people in the county , so we want to make sure they are getting these resources and getting books .”
Executive Director Susan Craddock said , “ We are a step up to quality through the state , and we are a Level 5 , which means
we have a gold medal . So we have the highest rating . We are not just preschool . It ’ s not a day care . It ’ s about building a relationship . We serve the whole family , whether it be mental health or social services , anything like that . We serve the whole family , not just the child .”
