One client ’ s son had no idea about what groceries to purchase for his mother . I asked him if I could make the weekly grocery list . He gladly said , “ Yes , please do that .”
His mother was in the early stages of dementia and could no longer figure out how to use the stove in her small apartment . From a prepared grocery list , he bought her flavored gelatin and cans of fruit . She had a lot of plastic and paper cups , so I used them and made the gelatin and combined it with spoonfuls of fruit from the cans . She could easily remove the plastic wrap to enjoy the fruit .
I suggested the son purchase only cooked meats .
I made wrapped sandwiches to put in her refrigerator . Also on the list for her son were lunch box-type items of fruit , applesauce and pudding . She only had to peel the foil paper away to eat the small portions .
Since she wasn ’ t diabetic , he also got individually wrapped doughnuts and snacks . He was very grateful . I suggested he take the frozen 15-pound turkey from her freezer to his house .
Remember our elders ’ diets change and the amount they want to eat changes too .
