Celebration marks season arrival in Coshocton
By Marianne Austin
People were getting into the spirit of Christmas in Coshocton with Miracle on Main Street on Friday , Nov . 17 , despite a little rain .
River View seventh-grader Brandon Kirkbride said , “ I don ’ t care if it ’ s raining . I just came out to see the parade because it ’ s about Christmas and it is fun .”
Shirley Gress is ready for the Christmas season to start . She was sitting on Main Street waiting for the parade to start . “ I don ’ t mind the rain much . I ’ ve got my tree up already .”
Amy Stonebraker from West Lafayette and her 2-year-old grandson Remington Collins were at the court square early on .
“ This is the first parade that he has been able to really enjoy , with the lights and everything .
It ’ s a little cold , but it could be a whole lot colder and a whole lot snowier , so I ’ ll take the rain . I came out to watch my niece Grace Kilchenman and the other girls on the royalty float in the parade . West Lafayette Queen Madison Larrison , Alaena Huff and Audrey Tubbs , and Bree Fink and Nora Harstine are royalty from Coshocton ,” Stonebraker said .
The parade started with color guards carrying the flag , followed by the Coshocton High School marching band playing “ Santa Claus Is Coming to Town ” and other favorites . There was a substantial representation of local businesses , civic groups and churches presenting a variety of holiday-themed floats , vintage trucks , beauty queens , elves and cartoon characters .
Parade units gave out candy , toys and snowballs , and there was even a bubble machine . Coshocton Dentistry handed out toothbrushes . Shepherds from the Coshocton Nazarene Church walked along the parade route giving candy to the children . The parade ended with Santa Claus coming to town on top of a Coshocton fire truck with horns and sirens blasting .
After the parade the holiday fun continued on the court square .
“ I ’ m thrilled at the amount of people that have come out , and the weather is giving us a little bit of a break , so we ’ re excited for the people to come over . We ’ re going to light our Christmas tree . We ’ re having hot chocolate and cookies for everybody , and Haley Evans has the Ridgewood High School singers here tonight singing carols at the pavilion . The commissioners are going to light the courthouse . It ’ s a great night for Coshocton ,” said Rhoda Warnock , vice president of Our Town Coshocton .
The Christmas tree was donated by Mike Parsons and Jeff and Sharon Poland . Cookies were provided by Coshocton Regional Medical Center and Coffee Connections . The Junior Women ’ s Club provided the hot chocolate . The Coshocton County commissioners announced in late summer that the Main Street side of the courthouse would have a light show timed to music this year ,
