By Josie Sellers For The Beacon

May 19 marked the start of the 50th anniversary of EMS Week . The theme this year was “ Honoring our past . Forging our future .”

Coshocton County Emergency Medical Service celebrated its past with a luncheon on May 23 at the new Coshocton station on Walnut Street .
“ We wanted to take a few minutes to recognize everybody and say thank you for everything you do ,” said Todd Shroyer , CCEMS director .
During the luncheon several people received Lifesaver Awards . This award is given to providers who had a patient in cardiac arrest , brought them back to life , and the patient is now alive and well thanks to their efforts . Recipients were Cali Davis , Courtney Emig , Tayler Wentz , Darin
Fandrey , Keith Shriver , Thelma Beckman , Donna Carpenter and Chip Udischas .
The Stork Pin is given to providers who helped deliver a baby in the prehospital setting . Recipients of this award were Adam Fisher , Rob Goodwin and Kacie Clark .
Several years of Service Awards also were given out including 35 years of service to Donna Carpenter and Rob Goodwin and two special ones for 45 years of dedication to Terry Shroyer and Thelma Beckman .
“ Forty-five-year awards are something I don ’ t think I will ever get to do again ,” Todd Shroyer said . “ It takes commitment to do anything that long .”
Terry Shroyer and Beckman both received special plaques shaped like the wooden backboard used in the past to move patients . “ I love the plaque ,” Terry Shroyer said . “ Our wooden backboards looked just like this . I ’ m very proud to have been here 45 years .”
Beckman said , “ I ’ m very excited for this . I enjoy helping people .”
The future of CCEMS will be celebrated Saturday , June 1 from 1-4 p . m . with a dedication and open house at the new Coshocton County EMS station at 724 Walnut St . in Coshocton .
“ It has been a long journey to get to where we are today ,” Todd Shroyer said . “ The old station on Chestnut Street was never designed to be a functional 24 / 7 EMS station with paid staffing . We recognized this and started working on a plan to replace the old Coshocton EMS station in 2004 . Over the years there have been many challenges to overcome , and there were many times when we thought it would never happen , but we can now celebrate in our new home .”
The CCEMS staff is extremely thankful for the support of the community .
“ This building belongs to all of us ,” Todd Shroyer said . “ We want to invite everyone to come and see our new station and help us dedicate it to the community on June 1 . If you are unable to attend the open house or you have a group who would like to arrange a tour of our new building , please call our office at 740-622-4294 . We would be happy to arrange a time for you to see the station .”
Light refreshments will be available , thanks to donations from area businesses .
