4-H experience can help with summer internships
By Jen Jones The Beacon
The Ohio State University Extension recently hired a student summer intern, Olivia Ault. She will provide support throughout the extension office and help with different programs and as needed with day-to-day operations and special projects.
“ In addition to my work behind the scenes, I assist with customer service tasks such as answering questions, supplying resources and helping direct individuals to the services they need,” Ault said.
Ault said her background in 4-H played a role in shaping her interest in education, agriculture and community engagement.“ I was involved in 4-H for 10 years, where I showed llamas and alpacas through Muskingum
County 4-H, an experience that not only introduced me to the agriculture industry, but also gave me opportunities to develop leadership skills— particularly through my involvement with the Muskingum County Junior Fair Board,” she said.
Ault wanted to intern at the extension office because she believes the experience will add value to her college education.
“ While I don’ t plan to pursue a career in county extension after graduation, this internship gives me meaningful insight into the work done by extension professionals and the behind-the-scenes operations of programs like 4-H,” she said.
Ault is majoring in education. She recently graduated from Ohio State ATI with an Associate of Science in Agriscience

Education.
“ I am continuing my education in Columbus at OSU at the College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, where I will be for two years to complete my bachelor’ s in agriscience education. My goal after college is to become a high school agriscience education teacher and FFA adviser,” she said.
“ In addition to my work behind the scenes, I assist with customer service tasks such as answering questions, supplying resources and helping direct individuals to the services they need.”

She also was active in FFA at John Glenn for four years. Ault said her involvement in FFA and 4-H allowed her to develop life skills such as responsibility, communication, leadership and record keeping.
“ These experiences laid a strong foundation for my personal and professional growth,” Ault said.
She also believes her time in both organizations allowed her to strengthen those skills and others.

“ Public speaking, teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking— all of which have helped shape me into the leader I am today,” she said.“ My combined experiences in both 4-H and FFA have had a profound impact on who I am, shaping my values and fueling my passion to advocate for the agriculture industry. I believe that programs like 4-H and FFA are incredibly valuable for youth. They not only provide hands-on learning opportunities, but also equip students with critical life skills that serve as lifelong advantages.”
