Dennison Railroad Festival set for May 30-June 1
Bernadette Kathryn to perform
By Teri Stein
For The Beacon
The annual Dennison Railroad Festival will have food , fun and music from May 30 through June 1 .
The festival will introduce visitors to the music of Bernadette Kathryn on Saturday night . The guitar player and singer from Detroit was recently nominated for a Josie Award in the Rising Star of the Year Country Female category . She will be accompanied by the Lonely Days band .
“ We ’ re really excited about her ,” said Michael Brindley , Railroad Festival committee president . “ She does a little bit of everything , and she has some originals that she will sing .”
Other entertainment scheduled during the week includes System Rewind , the NEXT , The Putnams , Badstone and Jon Doe .
Brindley announced the festival should have more food vendors this year .
“ I believe this will be the most food vendors we ’ ve ever had . We ’ re really expanding the selection since we ’ re trying not to have any more than one or two people selling the same thing ,” Brindley said , adding it will be good for vendors and festival visitors as well . “ There ’ s going to be plenty of things for them to try .”
The festival committee members include Brindley , Beth DiDonato , Mary Dunfee , Derek Kohler , John Rypien , Connie Hillyer , Sissy Coen and Tracie Ayers .
Brindley has been serving on the festival committee for about four years .
“ I got involved the year that they had decided they were no longer going to have a festival because , having grown up in the Twin Cities area , I knew how important it was to have something that was local and easy to access for kids , adults and families all alike ,” Brindley said .
The festival committee also has been working with the ride operator to have some input into which rides are brought to the festival and to keep the ride ticket prices as low as possible , although it is the ride company that sets ticket prices .
“ We ’ ve heard the community . It has been a big concern in the past , and we really want to try to make it as affordable as possible ,” Brindley said . “ Last year we were able to negotiate the ride prices to remain the same Thursday , Friday and Saturday . Normally on Saturday , they go up because it ’ s a full day versus a partial day . But we were able to negotiate with the ride company to keep the ride prices the same . So we ’ re hoping to do that again .”
The talent show has changed to a new time this year and will begin Thursday at 5 p . m . Sign-ups will be online only , and participants can sign up until 4:15 p . m .
“ We found that doing them on paper , papers would get lost in the mail . People would show up thinking they had mailed it , but it hadn ’ t made it to us yet ,” Brindley said . “ Everything is digital this year . You can find it on our Facebook page . Just click on the link , fill out the form and you ’ re good to go .”
There are already two participants signed up for the show .
“ Both are singers . We have a 19-year-old and a 30-yearold . That ’ s the one thing I will tell you we love the most about this talent show — we get a variety of talent and a variety of ages ,” Brindley said .
Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners of the talent show .
The queen contest is open to young women in high school from Tuscarawas County , and application is online at the Dennison Railroad Festival Facebook page . The contest is scheduled to be held at the Dennison Presbyterian Church on Wednesday , May 29 at 5 p . m .
The festival committee would welcome new volunteers and groups to help on the committee or at the festival .
“ It ’ s a full week of work making sure the rides get set up , making sure the vendors get set up , having the electric run , keeping utilities on . It ’ s a lot of work ,” Brindley said , adding planning for next year will start immediately after the festival ends .
Crafters will again be part of the festival , but they will be mixed in with the other vendors on the midway .
The parade is on currently . Planned construction in downtown Dennison will not begin until after the festival . Those interested in being in the parade should email rrfestinfo @ gmail . com for the lineup time and location .
Watch the Dennison Railroad Festival Facebook page for more updates . The 5k race is still pending .
