Civil War veteran finally honored in New Bedford
On May 19 a special memorial service was held at New Bedford Zion Cemetery . Through the research of Trent Johnson , Jeffrey Schrock and Larry Stahl , it was found Solomon Duncan died in 1865 at Victoria , Texas and was buried in an unmarked grave without a proper military service .
Working with the Sugarcreek American Legion Post 494 , documentation was presented to the Coshocton County Veterans Service Commission , which provided an official military headstone that was placed beside the headstone of his parents .
Trent Johnson will present 51st OVI — Its Men , Movements , Battles and Legacy , a comprehensive journey into the heart of one of the Civil War ’ s most distinguished regiments , on May 23 at 6 p . m . at the JHM .
Johnson began his love of history and genealogy in 1976 when he was just 11 years old while searching for a Revolutionary War ancestor in Muskingum County with his father and grandmother . This has led to over 30 years researching the 51st OVI .

The Coshocton County Honor Guard , 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and American Legion Post 494 conducted the service . Linda Stefanov , commander of Post 494 , and Jeff Schrock gave speeches . Sugarcreek Boy Scout Troop 91 led the Pledge of Allegiance while Glen Hammel portrayed Solomon Duncan . Music was provided by Steve and Lisa Ball from Columbus .
Many members of the Duncan family were in attendance . Proclamations were presented to the family and an official veterans service flag .
Museum program offers Civil War living history
