Local author is releasing her new ‘ Cooking for a Cure ’ book

When Maranda Cress ’ Relay For Life team started talking about doing a cookbook fundraiser , she knew she had the information to make that happen .
“ I walk ( at Relay For Life ) because I lost my husband to brain cancer ,” Cress said . “ I had a folder of stuff from doctors , information on side effects and stories of what other people had been through that I wrote down . I thought I could make the cookbook and put all this information with it because I never found a book when I needed it that had everything I was looking for .”
Cress ’ “ Cooking for a Cure ” is much more than a cookbook .
“ I thought about what I would have liked to have known ,” she said . “ This book has stories from caregivers and survivors , information on stages of cancer , tips on medication , how to combat side effects , and tips for caregivers about their own exercise and nutritional needs . It ’ s all stuff no one ever told me . I was flying blind . People would give me pamphlets , but I had no idea what I was looking at afterward .”
The book also has a section on vocabulary . “ Doctors are busy and would be in and out ,” Cress said . “ I ’ d jot down words so I could search for their meaning later .”
Cress also made sure the recipes included in the book are easy to make . “ Even the dinners that take a little longer to cook , like meatloaf and beef stroganoff , are easy to put together ,” she said . “ They have easyto-find ingredients too , and I give more than one
alternative if you can ’ t find something .”
Many of the dishes can be made ahead of time , frozen or put in the slow cooker .
“ As a caregiver you might be gone all day long ,” Cress said . “ We ’ d have a treatment for radiation , then go to a different doctor ’ s appointment and have to get medicine at the pharmacy . You were exhausted . And who wanted to go cook ?”
Slow cookers are one way Cress offers suggestions to have meals ready that are healthier than ordering a pizza because you are too tired to cook .

Reviews are one of the factors Amazon uses to calculate who are bestselling authors .
Proceeds from the book will help Cress ’ Royal Butterflies Relay For Life team raise money for the American Cancer Society .
“ The teams can still raise money even though we are not doing the walking part ,” she said . “ They are looking for a new leader ( for Relay ), and if they get one , we can go back to having the walk . In the meantime , though , the teams can still reach their goal of $ 1,500 to turn in .”
