Letter to the Editor,
I want to take a moment to explain why I strongly support the upcoming children’ s services tax levy and why I believe our community should as well.
I know the word“ levy” might make some people tune out. I get it. These are tough times. Costs keep rising, but our incomes don’ t. Every dollar counts. That’ s exactly why I want to share why this levy is so important.
The children’ s services levy provides essential care for children in the custody of Coshocton County’ s Job & Family Services. It covers their housing, food, clothing and basic needs— nothing more, nothing less. And importantly, not a single dollar goes toward salaries.
This isn’ t a new tax; it’ s a renewal. That
went to River View’ s Atyana Milici for the 50 freestyle, Coshocton’ s Gabriella Wesney for the 100 butterfly, River View’ s Britany Hammond for the 100 freestyle and
means your tax bill won’ t increase. It simply maintains the funding level we’ ve had for 30 years. Last fall voters rejected a levy that would have increased funds. This time we’ re only being asked to continue what we’ ve already been paying.
Let’ s put that in perspective. In 1995 voters approved a levy based on home values at the time. Since then what homeowners pay for this levy has stayed about the same. For example, my home in Coshocton is worth around $ 140,000. In 2024 I paid just $ 6.38 for this levy, likely the same as the homeowner of my house did 30 years
River View’ s Kynsingten McMasters for the 100 backstroke.
River View’ s boys 400 freestyle relay of Kyle Roach, Dustin Gregory, JT Allison and Jamison Adams earned secondteam honors. The River View 200 medley relay of Jamison Adams, Dustin Gregory, JT Allison and Kyle Roach received honorable mention.
Jamison Adams of River View earned first-team honors for the 100 backstroke and second team for the 100 freestyle. Secondteam honors also went to River View’ s JT Allison for the 500 freestyle. Ridgewood’ s Cohen Miller got honorable mention for the 200 freestyle. River View’ s Dustin Gregory received honorable mention in the 100 butterfly.
Reader: Yes on children’ s services levy
ago. But we all know $ 6.38 buys a lot less today than it did in 1995.
The cost of caring for children has skyrocketed. In 2024 JFS spent over $ 2.6 million to care for the children in its custody. The levy provided just 17 % of that funding, about $ 450,000. The rest had to come from state and federal sources, which aren’ t guaranteed.
Renewing this levy will keep that $ 450,000 coming in for the next five years without raising your taxes. It’ s a small but crucial investment in protecting some of our most vulnerable children.
I believe we have a moral responsibility as a community to ensure these kids are cared for. That’ s why I’ m voting yes on the levy renewal, and I hope you will too. John Piper Coshocton
