Letter to the Editor,
Perhaps the greatest dis-
agreement between my fam-
ily member and my lunch
companion is over why the
economy is booming. Mr.
Fair’s equation seems to
suggest that most voters
ascribe the economy’s ups
and downs to the incumbent
president. Most economists,
however, are skeptical that a
president can be judged so
simply.
Are we now experienc-
ing a Tr ump boom, or a
continuation of the recovery
that began under President
Barack Obama? The right
answer is a bit of both and a
bit of neither.
Many economic devel-
opments are outside any
p ol ic y m a ke r’s c o nt r ol .
Some economists st ress
technological change as a
force driving the business
to ser ve the community
during the COVID-19 pan-
demic.
Modified hours and ser-
vices will be as follows:
Hours of operation Mon-
day through Friday will
cycle. Others look to irra-
tional waves of optimism
and pessimism. The impact
of the coronavirus on the
economy in China — and
perhaps elsewhere as well
— is a vivid reminder that
shocks can be hard for poli-
cymakers to anticipate and
address.
Most economists I know
judge presidents by their
actions rather than by the
results that happen to occur
under their watch. From this
perspective, Mr. Trump’s
record is mixed at best.

Irish workers, while the
western branch of the Cen-

Chinese workers. The two
work crews met at Promon-
tory, Utah in 1869. Was it
true that an Irish member
of the work crew saved one
of the spikes from the cer-
emony when the two work
crews met at Promontory,
Nevada in 1769? The crews
met in Utah, not Reno in

Think about errors that
could be easily be corrected
in the samples below.
What did it mean to
travel in America “steer-
age”? In the late 19 th centu-
ry immigrants from Europe
traveled below decks where
the ship’s steerage gear was
stored.
When did Ellis Island
open?The island in upper
New York Bay, named for
its former owner, Sam Ellis,
operated as Immigration
center from 1892 to 1954,
and closed during WWI
(1917-1919.
Who was Squanto?This
was the native American who befriended the Pil-
grims at Plymouth Colony
during the winter of 1620-
1621. He belonged to the
Pawtuxet tribe.
What rank did Tecum-
seh reach in the British
army?He fought against the
U.S. as a British brigadier-
general in the War of 1812.
Born in western Ohio he
was defeated at the Bat-
tle of Tippecanoe in 1811.
He was killed in 1813 in
Ontario at the Battle of the
Thames.
Where is Tippecanoe?In
Indiana where in 1813 Wil-
liam Henry Harrison led a
regiment to victory over the Indians led by Tecumseh.
Your sister was the first
person who flew an airplane
in 1909 at Kitty Hawk.
Can you find the three
errors? First of all, it was
the Wright brothers who
flew, secondly it was 1909
not 1809 (an easy error),
and it was North Carolina.
Lastly, try your best to
avoid misleading details
by carelessly adding poorly
researched genealogical
information to the family
tree.

umn will run weekly in
