Fundraiser to help group with work at Royer Chapel

By Josie Sellers For The Beacon
The new Coshocton County Historic Cemeteries Preservation Collective is preparing for its first fundraiser , which will help with projects at Royer Chapel and Cemetery .
“ This is a new nonprofit group started by decedents of the Royer family ,” said Angie McCullough-George , a Royer descendant and cofounder of the preservation collective . “ There are a lot of projects we want to do , and to apply for grants , we had to have a nonprofit status .”
They already received a grant from the Schooler Family Foundation , which will be used for a community prayer garden at the Royer property .
“ The grant covers the flowers , the planting and natural items , but we want to enhance it further with a
walkway and make it more accessible from where the driveway is ,” McCullough- George said . “ We ’ d like to keep restoring headstone too and have a perpetual care fund .”
To start raising funds for these projects , the group will hold a charity cornhole challenge on Saturday , June 15 at Lake Park in Coshocton . “ You can sign up in advance or just show up ,” McCullough-George said .
Registration will be at 10:30 a . m . at shelter No . 4 . The cost is $ 20 per person . All proceeds will go toward the Royer Chapel and Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund . All ages are welcome . Bring your own boards if you can . The grand prize will be an overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky for a family of four . To learn more and register , visit www . royerchapel . com .

The new Coshocton County Historic Cemeteries Preservation Collective is preparing for its first fundraiser , which will help with projects at Royer Chapel and Cemetery .
Kitchen food truck will be there and open at 10 a . m . Ten percent of its proceeds for the day will be donated back to Royer Chapel and Cemetery .
“ They have been awesome to work with ,” McCullough-George said . “ Even if you don ’ t want to play cornhole , you can come get some food and help .
Everyone is welcome . Come down , say hi and learn about the chapel .”
The event also will have donation baskets from local businesses that people can enter to win , and T- shirts and car magnets will be for sale .
Royer Chapel and Cemetery was started in the 1850s . McCullough-George is the fourth great-granddaughter of Nicholas and Ann Royer .
“ They donated farm land along with the Factor family to establish a French Catholic mission on the property ,” McCullough- George said . “ Both families immigrated from France and were Catholic . There was nowhere for them to practice their faith at the time . The dioceses said they could build a place , but they had to donate the land .”
McCullough-George grew up in the West Lafayette area and graduated from Ridgewood . She now lives in Vermilion but still has family in Coshocton County .
“ I had family here before Ohio was even a state ,” Mc- Cullough-George said . “ My family goes back a long way . I love history and preservation . I like telling people ’ s stories who blazed the trail to create a life for those who came after them .”

“ Four years ago my mom and I went out to there , and it was all overgrown and some headstones were broken ,” McCullough-George said . “ We started a Facebook page to see if there was interest in helping there , and the community really rallied around us . We want to help other family cemeteries in Ohio too with our nonprofit status and resources .”
