Juneteenth Event held downtown

A new bronze monument has been added to the court square . The monument was unveiled at the Coshoctonians for Peace and Equality Juneteenth Celebration on June 18 .
The historical marker shares the story of Henry Howard , an African American man , who was killed by a lynch mob in 1885 on the court square . He was believed to be responsible for an assault on two women near West Lafayette , but was killed before he was brought to trial .
During the event , the winners of the Racial Justice Essay contest were honored . “ For this contest , Coshocton County students in grades nine – 12 were asked to write an essay that used a specific historical event of racial injustice to make connections between past and present and to offer insights into how history could be overcome to change current realities ,” said Lucy Bryan Malenke , one of the founders of Coshoctonians for Peace and Equality .
The winner of the contest was Za ’ nyah Muhammad . She is a 10 th grade student at Ohio Virtual Academy and her essay was titled

Javanna Ramsey , the other founder of the group , said , “ I just want to say thank you to everyone for their support and for all the hard work and research EJI has done . And to everyone in the community who has backed us . Racism does affect our little town and we are the group to stop it .” The group currently has about 20 people and anyone interested in joining can contact them through the Coshoctonians for Peace and Equality Facebook page .
