Pomerene Center keeps kids busy at the downtown artPARK
By Marianne Austin
The Pomerene Center for the Arts had activities for area youth at the artPARK .
Teaming up with Coshocton Public Library , Clary Gardens , Johnson Humrickhouse Museum and Roscoe Village , they presented learning projects for children kindergarten through sixth grade . Based on Tom Nooks ’ Nintendo game , Animal Crossing , children and their parents learned what to expect when you set out to create your own island paradise .
“ In the game Nook helps set you up with your very own island . You get to choose your own hair and eye color , the shape of your eyes , nose and mouth , and you are there walking around the island . It ’ s a game that is currently pretty popular ,” said Anne Cornell , artist and director for the Pomerene Center .
The Pomerene activity was held at the artPARK on Main Street every Wednesday through the month of June .
Partnering with Tails and Tales , the Coshocton
Library ’ s summer reading theme , Animal-xing is a program where artists work with local children and their families to create an animal island they can visit anytime this summer .
“ We made T-shirts the first week with us on them , and then you get your very own island with little creatures that are their friends . Our island is back here where the solar panels are because it is surrounded by the sidewalk and it looks like an island . They get to make their very own house . We made flowers and invited some birds , and that whole area will be the children ’ s art work . We call it Animal-xing ,” Cornell said .
Four-year-old Madalyn Shingleton wanted to make a baby bird . “ It doesn ’ t look like a bird yet ,” she said . “ Actually , it needs a head and beak and a little tail .”
Shingleton attended the event with her 11-month-old brother , Jaxton , and her mom , Kristen Shingleton .
“ Make the shape using aluminum foil ,” Cornell

Anne Cornell from the Pomerene Center shows Madalyn Shingleton and Adley Brown how to shape their bird from aluminum for a project during Animal-xing at the artPARK .
said . “ The secret ingredient is paper mache made from flour and water . Tear strips of colored paper , dip it into the paste and lay it on the form . All the colors and textures will make it look like feathers .”
Aimee Brown and her daughter Adley also worked on a bird project . “ We have been doing things at Clary Gardens and the Johnson Humrickhouse Museum and at the library , so there is something each day ,” Aimee Brown said . “ It ’ s super awesome because I would never think of making birds from aluminum foil . I appreciate when other people can bring this to her life because I don ’ t know how . This is Adley ’ s second week . Last week we made flowers out of paint rollers , nylon footies and pipe cleaners .”
On Sunday , July 11 at 6:30 p . m ., they will open the exhibit , “ Animal Crossing .”
“ Invite all of your friends and family , and we hope to have a good crowd with the library ,” Cornell said . “ We plan to have a picnic and a funk band .”

The Coshocton Port Authority announced its efforts toward the creation and implementation of The Coshocton Collaborative . Over a year ago , the Coshocton Foundation asked local nonprofits how they would make Coshocton a better place to live if they had $ 500,000 to do so . The Coshocton Port Authority answered that question with The Coshocton Collaborative .
The Coshocton Collaborative will be housed
|
in an existing building located in the downtown area , to be converted into a maker space , business incubator and co-working facility that will promote entrepreneurship and foster economic growth .
The Coshocton Foundation was encouraged by the vision cast by the port authority , and in recognizing the need for the project , it has pledged $ 375,000 toward The Coshocton Collaborative . The grant request was written jointly with Our

Town Coshocton with the remaining $ 125,000 to be utilized toward the salary of the director for two years .
Port authority executive director Tiffany Swigert said , “ The collaborative doesn ’ t happen without the foundation . They share this vision with the port authority and can see the impact that an entrepreneur center will have on Coshocton and its surrounding areas for generations to come . The pieces of this

grant-funding puzzle have to fit perfectly , and we are so appreciative of all parties working diligently to move this project forward .”
The port authority is working with regional and state partners including OMEGA to secure funding for the collaborative . They are taking all of the necessary steps to ensure the project is well-positioned for EDA funding and have been working closely with the regional EDA representative .
