Lyme disease is on the rise here in Coshocton County

Good afternoon everyone , Cindy here from Coshocton Public Health . We ’ ve been seeing a rise in Coshocton ’ s Lyme disease cases , so we ’ re sharing this Public Health Matters segment to cover some CDC tips on how to prevent a tick bite .
Tick exposure can occur year round , but ticks are most active during warmer months ( April through September ).
Before you go outdoors : know where to expect ticks , treat clothing and gear , use EPAregistered repellents , and avoid contact with ticks .
Many people get ticks in their own yard or neighborhood as ticks live in grassy , brushy or wooded areas or even on animals . Walking your dog , camping , gardening or hunting could bring you in close contact with ticks .

You can buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear , or you can treat boots , clothing and camping gear with products containing 0.5 % permethrin . Permethrin remains protective through several washings .
EPA-registered repellents can be used such as those containing DEET , picaridin and Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus . EPA ’ s helpful search tool can help you find the product that best suits your needs . Always follow product instructions . Do not use products containing OLE or PMD on children under 3 years old .
And if you can , avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter and walk in the center of trails . After you come indoors , check your clothing for ticks , remove if found , use the dryer to tumble dry clothes on high heat for 10 minutes or more depending upon dampness or wash clothes in hot water if required to kill ticks , and examine pets , coats and daypacks .
Shower within two hours of coming indoors to wash off unattached ticks and do a tick check of under the arms , in and around the ears , inside the belly button , the back of the knees , in and around the hair , between the legs , and around the waist .
To remove a tick , use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin ’ s surface as possible and pull with steady pressure without twisting or jerking to prevent leaving mouth parts behind . Never crush a tick with
