Plan for financial challenges of dementia

During Financial Wellness Month this January , the Alzheimer ’ s Association is encouraging individuals and families to make financial plans that will create some security in preparing for an unexpected crisis of caring for someone with Alzheimer ’ s or other dementia .
One in nine Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer ’ s disease . That ’ s nearly 7 million Americans across the country and 236,200 in Ohio . Dementia not only takes a tremendous physical toll on diagnosed individuals , but also the costs associated with the disease can be overwhelming and put a huge economic strain on families . Disease-related costs can jeopardize a family ’ s financial security , and many families and caregivers make enormous personal and financial sacrifices .
To help families navigate financial challenges , the Alzheimer ’ s Association offers a free online education program titled Managing Money : A Caregiver ’ s Guide to Finances .

The Pomerene Fine Arts Center Inc . has submitted its plans for the Pomerene Home to the Coshocton County Library Board of Trustees . “ I think ( the library board ) will be very positive ,” said secretary-treasurer of the Pomerene Center , Lyle Ehrenberg . “ The first year , we are really trying to spotlight local people - both amateur and professional . Why not ? We ’ ve got good local people . The whole idea is to build community involvement ,” Ehrenberg continued . If the library board approves the plans two of its members will be placed on the center ’ s board of trustees . In addition to the events outlined in the plans the Pomerene Center is planning to coordinate with other community groups such as the Fine Arts Guild , Footlight Players and Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum .

“ When we first started , we thought finding work would be a problem . Now we see the trouble is finding and keeping qualified people to do the ( construction ) work . It kind of took a flipflop on us ,” said Tim Howell . Howell is co-owner of Thomas Ceramics , soon to be located at 138 Water St ., which incorporated in October last year . “ We work in a multitude of areas ,” said co-owner Robert Thomas . The pair have been in the construction business for a combined 33 years , and the new year has seen them secure several contracts including work in Dresden building condominiums and installing an operating room in an Alliance hospital . They ’ ve also been contracted to fix independent living homes for the elderly throughout the county .

Heavy rains have brought some of the most severe flooding seen since 1969 . “ This is the first time I ever had to ( seek shelter ) since 1978 . This is the first time I ever had to leave home . If it wasn ’ t for the American Red Cross , I don ’ t know where I would have gone ,” said Vicki Jones , one of several county residents who had to leave their home . Bob Evans was forced to close yesterday morning after the restaurant found itself a virtual island and water began to seep in . Firefighters in Killbuck had to fight a fire in waist-deep , freezing waters . “ With the adrenaline pumping , when I first went in ( the water ) I didn ’ t feel the cold ,” said volunteer firefighter Amanda Reed . Crews fought the fire for 15 minutes . “ I couldn ’ t feel my legs at all , at that point they were just numb ,” Reed said . Pat Tabereaux , owner of the house whom had evacuated earlier in the day , said “ I ’ m so grateful that they got his flag ,” in reference to her late husband ’ s funeral flag . Although firefighters could not save the house , they managed to get the flag and several other important items out of the house .

Assistant Fire Chief Tim Arnold has retired after 35 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Three Rivers District Fire Department . “ I ’ m going to miss the people ,” said Arnold . “ We probably describe ourselves as a dysfunctional family , but when the call comes in for help , we put all our differences aside when we go out that door . These are the guys you would want to help you . Our goal is to get out there and help and make sure everyone makes it back safe .”
