Scholarship to honor memory of Emily Dahman
By Josie Sellers
Cadie Guilliams decided to use her senior project at River View High School to honor the memory of Emily Dahman .
Dahman was diagnosed with AML leukemia in September 2013 . She beat the cancer but died in April 2014 of other complications when she was in the fourth grade with Guilliams at Conesville Elementary School . Dahman , however , will be remembered this spring when the Emily Dahman Memorial Scholarship is presented .
The scholarship will be awarded to one or two seniors from the Class of 2022 . It will either be two $ 500 scholarships or one $ 1,000 scholarship , depending on the number of applicants . Those applying must

Cadie Guilliams decided to use her senior project at River View High School to honor the memory of Emily Dahman . have attended Conesville during the 2013-14 school year and been in the fourth grade then . The applicant also must plan to attend a two- or fouryear university program .
One of the ways Guilliams raised money for the scholarship was by raffling off a huge basket of “ happy .”
“ When we were in school , we had T-shirts made to help her , and they had a list of songs on the back of them . ‘ Happy ’ was her favorite song ,” Guilliams said .
Guilliams wrote letters seeking donations for the basket and was able to fill it with a variety of items and gift cards . She also received a $ 250 donation from MFM and McWane for the scholarship . Other donations have popped up at unexpected times when Guilliams was either selling raffle tickets or working on her project .
“ At the West Holmes
basketball game , the guy who won the 50 / 50 donated his $ 84 to the scholarship ,” Guilliams said .
Another time she was at Tim Horton ’ s with project mentor Kathy Bigrigg when a gentleman came in and asked what they were working on . Guilliams answered his questions , and when he left , he slipped them a $ 100 donation .
Bigrigg has really seen Guilliams come out of her shell while working to raise money for the scholarship .
“ When we started , she didn ’ t really like to talk ,” Bigrigg said . “ Now she ’ s been on the radio and has talked at basketball games . I ’ ve seen a lot of growth in her confidence . This senior project program is amazing . They have 54 kids doing senior projects . I can ’ t speak highly enough about the program . This is the sixth year doing it . It ’ s lifechanging .”
Guilliams pulled Dahman ’ s grandmother as the winner of the raffle basket but is still taking donations for the scholarship . Anyone interested in contributing can do so through the Emily Dahman Memorial Scholarship Fund at Park National Bank or email Guilliams at cadenceeg737 @ gmail . com .
“ I ’ m so glad we ’ ve come this far with the scholarship ,” Guilliams said .
She plans to have a panel of people including members from the education field and a member of Dahman ’ s family help her pick who wins the scholarship .
“ Emily wanted to be a teacher , and her mom thought this would be a great idea to help someone further their education ,” Guilliams said .
