Your Journey . Our Mission . rep , also are seeking funding so they can award each youth with basic supplies to begin their goat ownership , such as buckets , feeders , hoof trimmers , tags and vaccinations .

“ We want to promote 4-H , grow the goat program , and recognize our local generous donor of the goats and her vision for her farm ,” Bookless said . “ This is a good opportunity for those who want to try showing goats .”
Slater said the contest helps offset costs because you must have two goats .
“ Goats are herd animals and thrive if they have a buddy ,” Bookless said .
Slater said , “ Buying two goats is less appealing than only having to buy one . If you change your mind , you bring the goat you won back to Slater Family Farm .”
The goats selected for the contest are three wethers and one doe . They all will be 1 year old this spring .
The deadline to register for the contest is Friday , March 14 , and essays will be due Friday , March 21 . The plan right now is to have winners picked by the 4-H Fun Fest on Sunday , April 6 . Shelter , fencing and companions do not have to be bought until after winners are announced .
“ Our goal is to get them everything they need to get started ,” Slater said . “ It ’ s hard to get started that first year when you don ’ t know what to expect . I want to give back to the community and educate kids . I want to be a friendly face for them to come to with questions .”
Bookless has been working hard to improve the goat program and the goat barn at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds . They now have the Goat High Point Merit Award program , which recognizes youth for going above and beyond with their involvement .
Numerous improvements also have been done to the barn . Tack platforms , decorative stenciling , fans , benches , a grooming area , barn doors and more have been added . Now they are looking into putting in more pens and are seeking donations of wheelbarrows , shovels , brooms and goat grooming stands .
“ We want a community area where all the stuff is there for you to use and then just put back ,” Bookless said . “ It ’ s a lot easier than having to haul in all kinds of stuff .”
Anyone interested in making a product donation to the goat barn can email Bookless at cbookless71 @ gmail . com . Monetary donations can be sent to the Coshocton County Agricultural Society at the fairgrounds and marked for goat barn improvements .
“ We had a lot of donors this last year and put signs up in the barn to recognize all of them ,” Bookless said . “ We could always use more help though .”
