United Way hires new director to succeed Mizer

Nursing students make a $ 500 donation to Genesis

T h e M u s k i n g u m University Nursing Student Organization recently donated $ 500 to the Women ’ s Boutique at the Genesis Cancer Care Center . The funds were raised by nursing students and will be used to assist breast cancer patients with supplies such as breast prostheses and mastectomy bras .

The United Way of Coshocton County announced Emma Mitchell as its new executive director , effective Jan . 2 . She will succeed Lyn Mizer , who has served in this position for the past 12 years .
Mitchell graduated cum laude from the Ohio State University in 2020 with a BA in Management , Leadership and Policy and a BA in Women ’ s Gender and Sexuality Studies . While in school Mitchell interned with the United Way in summer 2019 .
“ While working with us , Emma proved herself to be a quick learner , eager to understand and help wherever she could . She will be a great asset to not only our community but to the United Way family ,” Mizer said .
Mitchell will be responsible for operations , agency goals , furthering the mission of the organization and helping create long-lasting change , not only by monetary donations , but also by building on relationships to advance the common good . The United Way unites neighbors and resources to impact lives in Coshocton County . One donation reaches over 30 programs , and 99 cents of every dollar donated stays in Coshocton County .
Board President Steve Oster said , “ I am excited to see Emma ’ s passion for nonprofits , wanting to learn more about the community but also wanting to give back to the community . She will have high energy to make a difference for United Way and the community .”

“ We are honored to have the Muskingum University nursing students contribute to the care our breast cancer patients receive ,” said Pebbles Thornton , director at Genesis of palliative care and hospice services . “ These students are our future healthcare providers and leaders , and we commend them for their commitment the Mount Leadership Society Scholars , where she organized donations for the Star House in Columbus , disbursed meals at the Community Kitchen , constructed care packages for the Women ’ s Shelter , created crafts and activities for Nationwide Children ’ s Hospital , and participated in a 24-hour dance marathon benefiting pediatric cancer patients at Nationwide Children ’ s Hospital .
“ I am passionate about giving back to the communities who have inspired and shaped me . I passionately want to support , defend and work to expand civil rights and liberties to all marginalized groups and communities . While working for the United Way , I hope to provide opportunities for providing empowerment , education , support and advocacy to those in need . I hope to find innovative and successful ways to highlight and support Coshocton County , its residents , and local businesses and organizations ,” Mitchell said .
