Hunting season is a busy time in Coshocton County
Coshocton County is a
huge hunting hub in the
state of Ohio. As a state
leader in deer harvests each
year for over 10 years, hunters
from across the Midwest
flock to Coshocton to be the
first ones on the ground at
the start of each season.
The most popular public
hunting ground is Woodbury
Wildlife Area, located
about 10 miles west of
the city of Coshocton on
OH-541. Access to the area
is available on a number
of state routes including
OH-16, OH-36 and OH-60.
Woodbury is the largest
public area in the state.
At 19,050 acres, this area
offers space for hunters,
birders, fishermen, hikers
and all outdoor lovers.
As a state leader in deer harvests each year for over 10 years, hunters from across the Midwest flock to
Coshocton to be the first ones on the ground at the start of each season.
There are endless lodging
options within the county
for every kind of traveler.
From cabins and campgrounds
to hotels, motels
and bed-and-breakfasts,
people will find a favorite.
The Cabin at Woodbury
is conveniently located just
outside of the Woodbury
Wildlife Area and includes
all the amenities needed for
a private, comfortable stay.
On the flip side, the Roscoe
Hillside Cabins are just
outside of Roscoe Village,
within walking distance of
shopping, dining and historic
attractions.
Roscoe Village is a
restored canal-era town,
perfect for the whole family
to enjoy. Coshocton Village
Inn & Suites is just a halfmile
over the new baridge
from Roscoe Village and is
one of the premier hotels in
the area as well.
Coshocton sees an influx
of visitors during each hunting
season. This year the
archery deer-hunting season
is Sept. 26 to Feb. 2. Youth
gun season is Nov. 21-22.
The most popular time to
visit will be Nov. 30 to Dec.
6 and Dec. 19-20. Guests
will book their stays far in
advance to be sure they can
utilize Coshocton’s plentiful
lands.
“We see a lot of guests
during the fall weekends
because of the beautiful,
scenic foliage and autumn
events like the Apple Butter
Stirrin’ Festival and Scarecrow
Trail. But during hunting
season, locals will go to
their favorite restaurant and
find it packed on a Tuesday
night,” said Rachel Bechtol,
Summer gardening fun with family
By Josie Sellers
Ronnie Henry has
been keeping his grandkids
busy this summer
learning gardening
skills outside his apartment
complex on Locust
Street.
“We did some last year
but not as much as we did
this year,” Henry said.
“We did flowers, mulch
and everything.”
Rylnn Rhoades, 11;
Dreyden Rhoades, 9;
and Alyviah Baker, 6,
also worked vegetable
plants in wherever they
could. Green beans, peppers,
tomatoes, corn and
cucumbers were mixed in
with the flowers. Rylnn
Rhoades’ favorite to
enjoy was the cucumbers,
and Baker’s favorite was
the tomatoes.
“They’ll pick the
cucumbers and eat them
right out of the garden,”
Henry said.
Dreyden Rhoades said
the whole process has
been fun.
“They like getting to
see the finished product,”
Henry said. “The
people here all appreciate
it too. We got a few
donations to help us, and
we share with everybody.
It was their idea
too to plant the tomatoes
so people in wheelchairs
could just roll up and
pick some.”
In addition to helping
them learn how to
raise and harvest the
vegetables, Henry also
teaches his grandkids
how to cook with their
harvest. “I cook all the
time,” he said. “I’m
really proud of them
and all the hard work
they’ve done.”
