The first Canal Days Festival will begin tomorrow
and run for three days. The event kicks off with
a dedication of the Triple Locks Parks, which is
being turned over to the Coshocton County Historical
Society. A parade and ball will be the
highlight of Saturday’s events. Sunday will see a
lemonade social and costume contest and topping
off the events will be the mayor’s promenade. All
throughout the festival games and vendors will
be found throughout Coshocton and Roscoe.

Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. Coshocton will welcome a new
historical marker for William Green in the court
square. The second president of the American
Federation of Labor and state senator, Green was
born right here in Coshocton back in 1873. He
originally wanted to be a minister, but his family’s
financial situation prevented him from continuing
his education after he turned 15. Unable to pay for
his schooling as well as his four other siblings, he
went to work at a local coal mine. He would then
use the money he made to pay for schoolbooks in
order to teach himself. He would become the secretary
of the local 379 Mine Workers Union at the
age of 18, an act which got him blacklisted from
many local mines. He continued to work for the
union and the mines that would hire him. Seeing
the horrible conditions of these mines firsthand he
decided to fight for the workers. In 1910 he became
a state senator and created the bill that would
become Ohio’s worker compensation law in 1913.
A year later he left the legislature to become secretary
of the United Mine Workers of America. In
1924 he was made president of the AFL and would
hold the position through World War II where he
helped organize the work effort. He would maintain
the position till his death in 1952. “My father’s
life is a tremendous example of what a person can
do in the United States,” said Mrs. Clara Scarr, one
of Green’s six children and resident of Coshocton.

As part of the Canal Days festivities a canoe race
was held on the Walhonding yesterday. The river
was swollen from heavy rainfall, but that did not
deter the racers. In the open classic Dexter and
Darren Conkle finished first followed by Dave
Gentry and Ed Halet in second and Lane Teater
and Kevin Caley in third despite a broken paddle
early in the race. In the mixed division Pat and
Rich Krueter claimed victory with Robin Chaney
and Teresa Kupp in second and Ellen and Gary
Kuls in third. The adult child division saw Bryan
and Steve Casey secure first place, Tom and Chris
Cullison second and Kerry and Amy Stone third
place. In the open class division Linda and Keith
Collins finished first followed by Stan Knepper
and Pat Scalia finishing second.
SATURDAY, AUG. 19, 2000
