Canal Lewisville UMC building bell choir

Canal Lewisville United Methodist Church is working to build its bell choir .
“ We only have a few people that play on special occasions now because it ’ s been hard for people to get together ,” Karen Little said . “ We practice on Thursdays . It ’ s been tough with COVID , but we are ready to play again . We ’ ve lost members like every church because everyone is getting older . We are down to about eight members . We do play for special occasions . Basically , Alan English , the choir director , and Ed Dueling , the three of us older ones are trying to make it work at this time .”
Little hopes to get children at the church involved .
“ My hope is to build the bell choir up from the bottom ,” she said . “ The regular handbells are too heavy for the kids , so we have a couple sets of the little school-type handbells , and

During children ’ s church time , I ’ m teaching them technique on how to ring the bells and a lot about keeping the beat and basic

Little said they have eight regular kids that come and others that come with grandma or at different times .
“ They don ’ t have to come all the time ,” she said . “ We ’ re organized so that we can have guest ringers with us anytime . I ’ ve been approaching this with chords , and we ’ re going to work toward reading music
— simple music with the color-coded books that are available and then working into regular music . It depends on how it goes , but right now the kids are just darn cute . They have a great time playing the bells , and they sing simple songs , like with three chords . There are a lot of these songs out there .”
The group is working on “ Angels Watching Over Me ,” “ Jesus Loves Me ” and the “ B i b l e .”
“ A lot of those standard church songs ,” Little said . “ I always invite the choir and the congregation to sing

along . We make it into a thing . They really love playing the bells , and it ’ s been really fun for me . I was an elementary all-around music teacher for 20 years . I did everything from kindergarten to high school vocal and junior high school band and bell choirs at churches . This is just fun .”
The entire handbell choir is like a single instrument with the musician responsible for only one or very few select notes that when played together with other musicians become rich melodies and harmonies .
