This was a winter of discontent, and summer could be worse

Letter to the Editor,“ Now is the hour of our discontent …”
The left is unhappy with the right, and the right is unhappy with the left. The middle seems to have eroded with everyone picking a side. Compromise has been abandoned, and the idea of“ Every man, woman and child is for themselves.”
Diversity, equality, inclusion, culture are being vilified as bad thoughts or ideas.“ Loving your neighbor as yourself” is a lost concept, and we are being conditioned to perceive“ others” as bad or actually
When I teach my memoir writing classes, I usually begin with“ I’ ve heard a lot of excuses and I don’ t accept any of them.”
Yes, my passion is writing, but I know it is not for everyone. However, your story needs to be written.

Couple all this with the current cuts to the federal budget for the sake of balancing the budget while cutting taxes to the top 1 % of the population, as well as to those big corporations, creating a tinderbox just waiting to explode.
Globally, we continue to isolate past friends and allies with sanctions. Some of our previous enemies are being encouraged to take advantage of our willingness to be“ isolationists” as well as“ nationalists.” Previous to World War I and II, this was the condition of many countries around
Remember the five W’ s: who, what, why, when and where. Even if you are busy, write one story a week. You will be able to show your family something they will treasure and answer some“ I didn’ t know that” questions.
Stop with the excuses and get started and share the copies.

“ Imperialism” was the tinder of World War I,“ tariffs” with“ nationalism” the tinder of World War II. Now we are creating the same tinder, which can only lead to the disruption of the positive growth almost every nation has experienced.
Domestically, we are less than a hundred days into the“ new administration,” which is supposed to be a“ honey moon” period. Instead, that goodwill has been cast aside for chaos. You see it in the stock market. You see it with our neighbors. You see it with our enemies. Most glaringly, you see an administration that is threatening the“ rule of law” by denying due process by threatening

Americans like us are paying the costs of executive decisons

Letter to the Editor,
Hands off! That is the battle cry from people protesting our current administration. Proponents of this administration are gleeful in rooting out corruption and greed, and yet they’ ve let the fox in the hen house.
Why are people upset? The Trump Administration has enacted executive decisions that negatively affect our communities and our nation. The first action we heard about was our removal from the World Health Organization. This decision immediately jeopardized global efforts to combat disease and erodes international health cooperation.
Next was our closure of USAID, which risks our national security and global stability. Withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords was next, reversing years of global climate commitments. Rollback of health care law firms.
Your rights are being taken away subtly under the veil of chaos and confusion. Amidst all the talk about making the government more efficient, the horrendous security breaches in national security, the break-ins to your personal information by DOGE, the weakness of the economy, the massive layoffs and rehiring, the freezing of government aid and grants, the protests in the streets, the counter protests, all those distractions are being created so you miss what is going on.“ Now is the winter of your discontent.” Wait until the summer when there are electrical disruptions, rising food and gas prices, job layoffs with more pain. Grant funding has been frozen that has halted many projects for public health, education, small business and infrastructure. EPA protection has weakened regulations on air and water quality, sparking widespread concern among health experts and state governments. There have been cuts to clean energy to improve energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. declare martial law. Think back to the days of the civil rights movement when martial law was declared in places. In 2007 a law was passed giving the president the ability to declare martial law without the governors of states’ approval.

Hitting close to home is the exurbanite tariffs enacted recently. My 401( k) retirement has tanked with lows not seen since the Great Depression, the 2008 housing crisis and the COVID years. And with these tariffs, we are all going to pay more for everything from clothes to washing machines and cars.
I understand the need to lower the U. S. deficit. But why is this administration making the American people carry the cost while there are billions of dollars being spent in subsidies to oil companies, the pharmaceutical companies, defense, and tax breaks to big business and billionaires? The government needs to work for us, the people, not just continue to line the pockets of those at the top 1 % who already have theirs. Andrew Carnegie would not approve, and I certainly don’ t.
