Maundy Thursday service starts Easter celebration
On April 14 several people gathered in a room at First Baptist Church of Coshocton for a meal , a presentation and communion . This day was Maundy Thursday , a church tradition and the beginning of the observance of the days leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ .
Church history says this name , Maundy Thursday , has its origins in the Latin word mandatum , or command . Christians remember the night before Jesus ’ arrest while they were observing the Jewish Passover and when Jesus told his followers , “ A new command I give you : Love one another . As I have loved you , so you must love one another ” ( John 13:34 NIV ).
The group at First Baptist started the evening with a meal — not the traditional Passover fare , but a soup buffet with sides and desserts . After visiting and singing , the lights were dimmed , candles were lit representing Jesus as the light of the world , and Pastor Joe Sanders walked the group through the biblical account of Jesus ’ last supper and what followed as he passed around other items representing parts of the story .
The account of Jesus washing his disciples ’ feet ( cloth and water ), his arrest , trial , the abuse he took at the soldiers ( thorny branches ), his death on the cross ( nails ), the sour wine offered to Jesus when he cried out “ I thirst ” ( lemon juice ), and how his disciples must have felt at his death were all shared . All this was followed by communion , reminding people of Christ ’ s broken body and spilled blood .
First Baptist Church of Coshocton is located at 618 Chestnut St . in Coshocton and meets Sundays at 9:30 a . m .
