CES family reading night was a huge hit for everyone
By Marianne Austin
Coshocton Elementary School hosted its third annual family reading night on April 11 . These programs help build family and school connections , get families excited about reading , and provide ideas to try at home .
Coshocton Elementary Principal Tony Meiser said , “ This is our third year since COVID two years ago . We ’ ve had Outback Ray with his giant snake and the magician Doug Scheer . This year we have Jim Basketball Jones all the way from Avon Lake for the main event .”
Jones delivers school programs for all grade levels . In first grade he was diagnosed with dyslexia and placed in a special education program for 10 years , eventually graduating from college . It took five years working with tutors and a speech therapist for him to be in a regular classroom . He knows the impact reading has on a person ’ s life . Along with performing basketball tricks , he brought pencils

for the children with a note from his mom : “ Do Something .”
Jones also brought Yetis to hand out as prizes . The Yeti is a character in one of his books , “ Bounce into a Good Book .”
“ We have about 20 community partners here including 4-H , Coshocton Public Library , Help Me Grow , United Way ,” Meiser said . “ We are super excited to bring this to the school as an outreach , but our primary focus is helping our students with reading through reading strategies for parents to use at home to build their reading skills . It is a collaboration between school and home to close the gap with some reading strategies .
“ They will be looking at basketball tricks , but the message is about reading . This is a big deal to have him here . We probably have about 500 people . They get a snack , pizza , dessert , water and a ton of door prizes . This is possible through title funds , bridging the gap to get students up to the reading level they should be at . “ We have been doing family reading night for several years now ,” Buskirk said . “ Every year it is more successful . We will continue to offer this event for our community as long as we can .
“ The teachers enjoy seeing the parents and family walk through the doors . It ’ s a great opportunity to say hello and touch base again and make the family and school connection . Mr . Meiser truly enjoys finding new and fun entertainment every year . We are really excited about Basketball Jones . Every student will get a free book of their choice and a reading tool that they can use at home . We have 11 prizes the students could win , two bicycles , two scooters , two different Lego sets and then four prize baskets .”
Emma Mitchell , director of Coshocton United Way , provided information about the Dolly Parton Imagination reading program .
“ They can get a free book every month ,” she said . “ Ohio has the greatest number of registrations for that program , and we are trying to get to everyone in Coshocton County who is eligible for that program .”
