Downtown Coshocton projects receive funding
The Ohio History Connection announced projects in Cambridge , Coshocton , Marietta and Millersburg are recipients of the National Park Service ’ s Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grants Program .
The grants will assist four Main Street communities in Ohio ’ s Appalachian region with the rehabilitation of historic buildings that prioritize economic impact , use of commercial first-floor space and upper-floor residential space , and encourage reactivation of vacant spaces .
Ohio was one of 10 states to be awarded this funding and is part of the federal program for the second time . The Ohio History Connection is regranting $ 498,817 to seven projects in the four communities .
“ This funding will further fuel efforts toward the preservation and repurposing of new multi-use space of our historic assets in Coshocton .”
— executive director of Our Town Coshocton Lanny Spaulding
The Ohio Main Street Program , administered by Heritage Ohio , works with communities across the state to revitalize their historic downtowns . Based in historic preservation , the Main Street approach was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to save historic commercial architecture , leverage local leadership and transform local economies . Heritage Ohio will administer the grant projects in conjunction with the local Main Street organizations .
“ The Ohio History Connection ’ s State Historic Preservation Office is excited to be working with Heritage Ohio to bring these grant funds to Ohio ’ s Appalachian region ,” said Mary Beth Hirsch , acting director of the State Historic Preservation Office . “ This is a rare opportunity to provide federal bricksand-mortar dollars to rural communities to encourage Main Street revitalization through the preservation of historic buildings .”
“ Heritage Ohio is delighted to be working with the State Historic Preservation Office to administer the Paul Bruhn grants ,” said Matt Wiederhold , executive director of Heritage Ohio . “ The funded projects will help transform underutilized buildings and
spaces in historic districts , create jobs and spur further investment in these downtowns .”
The projects in Coshocton benefiting from this are the Honey House and the row houses on Chestnut Street .
The Honey House at 422-424 Main St . received a grant of $ 59,990 . The Honey House , part of the Coshocton Main Street Historic District , has suffered vacancies of its storefronts for 10 years and far longer for its upper floors . This grant award will be used to restore the building ’ s historic wood windows , an important initial step in the planned overall rehabilitation of the building for new commercial and residential use .
The 603 Chestnut St . row houses received a grant of $ 50,000 . The building on the corner of Chestnut and Sixth streets in the Coshocton Main Street Historic District is an early 20thcentury craftsman-style row house with clay tile roofs and substantial front and rear porches for each of its eight units . The grant award will help fund masonry work
and repairs to the gutters and downspouts , exterior wood elements , and the porches as part of an overall rehabilitation project that will return this building to full occupancy .
“ Our Town Coshocton is pleased to announce that its selected candidates for Paul Bruhn grant funding have succeeded in being awarded these much-needed dollars for exterior rehabilitation ,” said Lanny Spaulding , executive director of Our Town Coshocton . “ These two locations will join a growing chorus of downtown revitalization projects occurring in our historic district . This funding will further fuel efforts toward the preservation and repurposing of new multi-use space of our historic assets in Coshocton .”
