The Park Hotel has been purchased by Zanesville attorney Jerold Zwelling. Ted Smuckler, a hospitality industry veteran of nearly 25 years from Cleveland, will serve as manager of the Coshocton landmark. With the new ownership there are plans to expand the dining room and bar. Built in 1882 the hotel became synonymous with progress in Coshocton as it grew alongside the railroad and implemented several innovations such as electric lights and an enclosed toilet. A fire in November 1946 would see the hotel closed for nearly 29 years, being reopened in 1966 by William Bachert.

Former dance teacher Donna Jean Hennessey Huey was honored by her former students Sunday. Huey taught dance in Coshocton and the surrounding counties for over 50 years, retiring last year following a cancer diagnosis.“ My dad was a strong man, and he wanted me to be a teacher, and he really pushed me to do it. I am not sorry that I went into teaching dancing because I have truly enjoyed every minute of it,” Huey said. Her dance group, the Hennessey Eaglets, had at one point nearly 100 students at a time and performed on Zanesville’ s TV station every Sunday for a few years. The marching corps she instructed won seven state championships and several national awards.“ She was just like a second mother to us. Why she would load up a car full of kids and take care of us weeks at a time taking us to camp,” said Kathy Ellis, who now runs her own dance studio in Newcomerstown.

Dr. Bonnie Coe, president of COTC, and Joel Hampton, executive director of the Roscoe Village Foundation, announced plans for the college to purchase the Inn at Roscoe Village.“ We could not have guessed( COTC) would be offering more than 50 classes in Coshocton( and) serving 400 students,” said Dr. Coe.“ We felt this location in the very heart of this great community would best meet the needs of our students and the community.” The Inn at Roscoe was constructed and gifted to the village by Edward and Frances Montgomery in 1982. The Montgomery’ s and the Montgomery Foundation were supporters of education in the county.“ I think they’ d be very proud today,” said Hampton.

A benefit was held for Joby Hawthorne, a 7-year-old diagnosed with Leukemia, on April 2 at the Riverfront Lounge. Hawthorne recently underwent his first round of chemotherapy.“ Joby loves cartoon characters, which is the reason we chose this,” said Brenda Mencer, Hawthorne’ s great-aunt, regarding the special guests Sponge- Bob and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.“ People have been great. They’ ve made him blankets and capes with his name on it because he is a superhero.” Another benefit will be held on April 12, which will be a luncheon and
auction at the Coshocton Moose.
