The Copa Issue 9 / July 2014 | Page 22

Since we officially launched on July 4th of 2013, HMTV has been all about promoting the great things that are happening everyday around us. In one year, the Facebook page along with our magazine, The Copa, has become Maricopa’s favorite way to find out what is happening around our community. However… It is the season of politics… Scandal, controversy, accusations, false promises…these are some of the words we hear when we are out in the community. So the question has been…How do we give the People, You, all those that are not interested in all the silliness that is our political process…yes, how do we give you a chance to meet the candidates and at the same time, not allow the shenanigans that usually come with it? With this question looming over us, we created the Hey Maricopa TV Rockin’ the Vote Challenge. This was set-up strictly for the Council Candidates, and in order for candidates to reach out to our massively cool audience—they have to pass a few challenges that will let us know how connected they are to the community. These activities are being recorded and put out there for everyone to see on our Facebook wall and on our website. - First part of the challenge was the bumper sticker exchange. The candidates that are running for City Council had to come to our office and post their campaign sticker on our window, but in exchange, they had to put our bumper stick on their vehicle and it has to be visible. - Second stage, will be the donation and ice challenge. The candidates will have a choice to take the “Ice challenge” with a $20 donation to either The Blue Star Moms of Maricopa, or The Rams Football Booster Club. If they want to decline the “ice challenge”, they can donate $25 to each organization. - Third part, will be the “meet and greet” interview with one of our young reporters, then the final challenge… - The last part will be “Truth or Dare”…this will be a three question interview and one follow-up, with the Maricopa Monitor’s Editor, Adam Gaub (We don’t want to be accused of preferential treatment and Gaub has a reputation of being tough and honest)…or…if they would rather try something different, they can accept a “Dare”. These Dares will be drawn from a jar and though they won’t be anything you would see on the Fear Factor, they will reflect their commitment to community service and the people they may represent.
