Hope Lodge Welcomes First Guests
The $ 25 million facility increases access for patients traveling to Dallas for lifesaving treatment .
eptember saw the American Cancer Society welcome its first guests to the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Hope Lodge facility in Dallas . Adjacent to Baylor University Medical Center on property donated by Baylor Scott & White Health , the facility offers cancer patients and their caregivers a home away from home when they travel to receive care from any of North Texas ’ premier medical centers .
Toby Bonham , a patient of Baylor Scott & White who travels from her home in Decatur to Baylor Dallas for cancer treatment , was glad to be able to stay close to the hospital the night before her appointment .
“ It ’ s such a helpful thing ,” she said of Hope Lodge . “ Without it , we would have to get up at 4 a . m . and get ready to make sure we were there by 7:45 a . m .!”
Besides the convenient location , the thoughtfulness behind the facility impressed Toby the most : “ We ’ ve been telling all our friends , it ’ s like a four- or five-star hotel . It ’ s beautiful and modern , well decorated , and it has an extremely large kitchen that is anybody ’ s wish for cooking in . You have your own space in the refrigerator , and your own stove to cook on . The people there are kind and
thoughtful .” She plans to stay at Hope Lodge before treatments in the future too .
The American Cancer Society ’ s 40,000- square-foot facility includes 50 private guest suites , each with two beds and a private bathroom . In addition , the facility features common living areas , dining room , laundry facilities , library , meditation room and outdoor garden .
Having survived cancer already , Toby understands the impact that spending days , weeks , even months away from home to receive treatment can have on a patient and his or her family . The emotional and financial toll of the loss of income plus medical bills , hotel rooms and dining out , can be staggering . “ You can run up an enormous hotel bill ,” she said , “ and Hope Lodge will help relieve that stress for me and for so many patients battling cancer .”
Thanks to the extraordinary support of generous donors , Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation , in collaboration with the American Cancer Society , surpassed its initial fundraising goal and helped raise more than $ 32 million for this effort .
