In building up Munhoe & Mar, we are clear of our vision, that is to build a modern firm which is versatile and accept changes easily by being disruptive in the industry. I think as a young firm, we are very agile and flexible, from the management aspect of the firm to understanding the needs of each and every single member of Munhoe & Mar. We also strive to be the firm that provides efficient legal services and creative legal solutions to clients.
The realisation and aspiration
At this stage of my legal career, it is still too early for me to conclude which is the most important skill that a lawyer should possess. However, I believe that the skill-set will change over a period of time, depending on the needs and the different stages of a lawyer’ s career. Critical thinking is a must-have for a lawyer, but to me, the right attitude should come first. Good working attitude such as being humble is very important. A humble person will get to learn and develop more as one will be more receptive to constructive comments and criticisms. Being humble is the best way for a person to discover her or his own weaknesses and strengths. I believe that being humble will make a person go far in all aspects.
Practising law could be a life-long career. There is no retirement age for a lawyer. The profession, however, is getting more and more challenging and competitive. The legal profession landscape is changing faster than ever due to new technologies and mindsets. My passion and love in law is keeping me going and hopefully, it will continue to sustain me in the profession. However, being a person who does not accept only the conventional way, I hope to change the way a conventional legal firm operates. With that, I hope Munhoe & Mar will be able to contribute to the development of the legal profession, however small it will be.
To be or not to be a lawyer?
Lawyers are trained to think, analyse and resolve legal issues and fight for what is right. We are trained to cover all possible angles so that we can protect the interests of our clients at all costs. Lawyers are being sought to avoid legal risk( and sometimes, commercial risk) or at least, to mitigate the risk in any transaction. For a legally qualified person who works in a non-legal field on the other hand, she / he is to facilitate the transaction and ensure it happens and risk to certain extent is normally acceptable. As such, if one can provide practical and legal solutions which is commercially viable, she / he will have the edge as she / he will know how to strike the balance between legal and commercial risks.
