UNE COM Stories from COVID-19

Rising second-year UNE COM student, Hannah Akre, COM ’23, is always up for a challenge. She is the proud co-founder and Executive Director of Health Goes Global, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Her passion for preventative health and global stewardship has propelled her team on various missions across the globe including water purification in Guyana.

With a pandemic impacting communities across the world, Health Goes Global took action. Student doctor Akre recalls:

As we learned more and more about the novel coronavirus, it became clear that prevention of transmission plays a huge role in keeping communities healthy. I felt I was doing my part staying home, transitioning to virtual communication both with family and with professors to continue medical school studies. As the situation worsened in the United States, the entire Health Goes Global team spoke on the phone to discuss our role in this pandemic. At Health Goes Global our mission is to improve health in communities through preventative medicine, which includes protecting the health care worker. We decided to donate our surplus of medical examination gloves to be used as personal protective equipment in New York City hospitals facing a great shortage of PPE as well as facing the greatest number of coronavirus cases. Providing medical staff with gloves enables them to continue serving those in need.

Executive Director, Hannah Akre, COM '23 and Director of Public Relations, Ethan Klausmeyer, get ready to ship 4,500 gloves to New York hospitals in need.
