SUSAN WEHRY, MD GIVES WEBINAR ON SAFETY FOR OLDER ADULTS

The freedom to come and go is essential to a feeling of home, connection to the natural world, physical fitness and high quality of life for older adults living in congregate communities. This was the essential message delivered by UNE’s Susan Wehry, MD, Chief of Geriatrics in the College of Osteopathic Medicine during her recent webinar “Safe/Unsafe Leaving: A new look at the old problem of ‘elopements’” for Constellation, a professional liability company on Feb. 19. “We were very pleased with the response rate to this offering,” said Lori Atkinson, RN, BSN, CPHRM, CPPS, Constellation Content Manager and Patient Safety Expert. “Normally our webinars average a 45%-50% attendance rate. Almost 60% of our long term care registrants attended and actively participated. Clearly this is a timely topic that is very much on everyone’s mind. Dr. Wehry's clarity and conversational tone also made it very accessible. "I'm glad to have had the opportunity to move this conversation forward," said Dr. Wehry, a lifelong advocate for people with disabilities, including older adults living with dementia who does not shy away from controversial topics. "We will find a better way to support people than simply locking them up for safety's sake". Constellation has made the webinar available on their You-Tube channel.
