JENIFER VAN DEUSEN ANNOUNCED AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF COPE, AND LEAD INVESTIGATOR FOR SAMHSA-FUNDED OPIOID PROJECT
Jenifer Van Deusen, MEd, Clinical Faculty/ IPE Coordinator at UNE COM, has been named Executive Director of COPE- the Coalition on Physician Education in Substance Use Disorders. COPE is a national organization dedicated to ensuring that all medical school graduates acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to prevent, identify, treat and
support the recovery of persons with substance use disorders. COPE is currently working with the Governor's Institute of North Carolina, the Providers Clinical Support System of the Substance Use Administrations (PCSS/SAMHSA) and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry to develop a course for medical trainees certifying their eligibility to prescribe medication that assist the recovery of people living with opioid use disorder.
In addition, Jenifer Van Deusen, MEd is the principal investigator for a U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Grant awarded to UNE COM to address the growing opioid epidemic. The grant will look at the adoption of a national innovation currently in development. This innovation will provide the necessary training to medical students prior to their graduation, so they can receive the waiver as soon as they begin residency.
