UNE COM RECEIVES AACOM EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNICATIONS AWARDS
COM took two AACOM Excellence in Communications Awards home for the 2018 calendar year. The quarterly newsletter, the Communicator, won 3rd place in the Newsletter category. The award recognizes the role communications has in advancing the osteopathic profession, and is judged based on creativity, overall objectives, and effectiveness.
COM also took 3rd place in the Social Media category for the OsteoBlast! Countdown and Student Instagram Takeover. The objective of the takeover was to highlight various activities and community members throughout the day to engage with attendees and prospective students who could not attend the event. The endeavor provided a glimpse of what life would be like as a UNE COM medical student.
COM Faculty, Ling Cao, MD, PhD, presented her oral abstract at the 23rd Annual IAMSE Meeting: Adapting to the Changing Times in Health Sciences Education. Her pilot study, “Effectiveness of Educating Health Care Professionals in Managing Chronic Pain Patients Through a ‘Supervised Student Inter-Professional Pain Clinic’”, focused on her work at Mercy Pain Center in Portland, ME, supported by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC). The study showed that UNE students from various health professional programs, who worked together to develop a care plan for patients with chronic pain, had increased their knowledge of pain physiology, and improved their ability and attitude in working in interprofessional teams.
