CELEBRATING ANOTHER YEAR OF EXTRAORDINARY ACTIONS
Phil Lee, COM '21 presenting Max Cohen, COM '20 with the Student DO of the Year Award
Amidst the hustle and bustle of medical school, the COM Community hit the breaks for a shared moment to recognize the individuals who made a significant impact this year. Although the End of Year Celebration took place on a rainy, Monday on April 15th, faces lit with enthusiasm for their fellow COMmunity (and quite possibly for the delicious cornbread). Vincent Buonocore, Assistant Director of Medical Student Services started things off. In the bonafied spirit of student affairs, assessment numbers determined that from January 1 to April 1, UNE COM students submitted over 111 event requests, 70 of which were related to research. Student organizations totaled almost 1200 hours of programming outside of COM’s challenging curriculum, which is a tremendous feat when you take into consideration the considerable amount of volunteer hours students contribute to hone skills in leadership, stewardship, professionalism, activism, time management, conflict resolution, problem solving, and more.
It was perhaps no surprise that the Outstanding Club and Organization Award was given to the group that submitted around 40% of all event requests: the American College of Emergency Medicine Physicians (EM Club). One of the nominations for the group stated: “EM Club has gone above and beyond my expectations. They’ve hosted multiple interesting and exciting workshops throughout the year that give students hands-on practice to learn new skills. They collaborate with other clubs and organizations to provide diverse programming and connecting students across various interests and interprofessional programs.”
The Humanism in Aging Action Awards were announced by Marilyn Gugliucci, PhD, Director, Geriatrics Education and Research, and the Director, U-ExCEL Older Adult Fitness/Wellness Program. The award winners had to answer the question: How will you apply what you learned from the Humanism in Aging Leadership Award Winner’s lecture in your future practice? Linda P. Fried, MD, MPH, the winner of the 2018-19 Humanism in Aging Leadership Award, made the final selection. https://www.une.edu/com/geriatric/awards-0/humanism-aging-leadership-award. The winners were: Divya Padmanabhan, OMS-II (third place), Brett Armstrong, OMS-I (second place), and Amy Courtney, OMS-I (first place).
