Matching is extremely competitive, and the NRMP have encouraged students to interview and apply at multiple locations in order to successfully match.1 To get an idea of the level of competition, in 2015, there were more than 40,000 participants in the NRMP competing for only 30,212 open positions.2 In 2018, the number had increased to 43,909 with only 33,167 positions offered.3 Of those, 4,617 were osteopathic medical students whose overall match rate was 81.7%.

Although residency matching is an individual challenge for medical students, it becomes even more daunting for couples

By the time medical students attend graduation, and take the oath to become physicians, they have collectively endured numerable years of hard-work, tireless motivation, and steadfast resolve to finally graduate. All that dedication and perseverance comes down to one moment that then decides the next chapter of their lives, and a new challenge—residency matching. There are a few different programs that students can match in, including the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the military match for those in the armed forces.
