Prof. Ekrem Savaş is a respected academic known for his contributions to the field of mathematics. In this interview, he shares his insights on transformation in science.
Question 1: What is Science?
Answer: Many events occur in nature: rain falling, planets moving, the moon appearing at night. Humankind is curious about these things. All sciences have actually arisen from this curiosity. For example, curiosity about underground minerals led to the science of geology, while curiosity about the sky and its study led to the emergence of astronomy.
Another reason for the emergence of science is humanity’ s desire to control. People are curious about everything that happens in nature and want to manage it; as a result, science emerges.
Question 2: Do you think science is open to transformation?
Answer: Science is definitely prone to transformation because, except for some fundamental sciences, all sciences change. Humankind learns new things every day. Different things are discovered in nature every day; the discovery of the moon and the sun, followed by planets and galaxies, are clear examples of this.
However, some fundamental sciences remain constant. For example, Euclid first defined the point, then the line, and later the plane. These terms never change, but they can evolve and transform. Consequently, science is always
