Never Lose Hope

Rüya YILMAZ ‣
The song“ Dos Oruguitas” by Lin-Manual Miranda describes transformation in life perfectly. The song is about two caterpillars who are in love and are scared of letting each other go, but they must do so in order to become their next selves. The idea of having to let go of something in order to move forward is something that all of us have to go through at some point in our lives. Therefore, we must accept the change.
So, the next time you feel scared of the future, remember that better things are coming; you just need hope and courage to get through the hard times.

As the chorus says,“ Ay, oruguitas, don’ t you hold on too tight. Both of you know it’ s timе to grow, to fall apart, to reunite.” Most of the time change is inevitable, relationships end, people fall apart, plans fail, but it’ s all a part of life. These changes, these heartaches that we go through, all help us transform into better people. So, instead of resisting this change, we must embrace it.
The third verse of the song describes the fear we feel when going through a period of transformation, the“ Oruguitas” now in cocoons and separated, fear the future,“ so afraid of change, in a world that never stops changing”. They eventually get out of their cocoons, the period of change, and are now something more beautiful; butterflies.
Over time, I’ ve learnt that even though leaving things like loved ones, places or even past versions of ourselves behind can be scary, it’ s essential for growth and I think this metaphor of butterflies explains it perfectly. The song ends with lyrics,“ Wonders surround you, just let the walls come down. Don’ t look behind you, fly‘ til you find your way toward tomorrow”.
