Culture Trader: Society’ s Effect on Culture

Ömer BEZİRCİLİOĞLU ‣
Our society has evolved rapidly in recent years, mainly due to technology and globalization. Culture no longer represents a single culture or a particular nation. Through social media, trends, and videos, people are exposed to many different cultures. Learning about other cultures can broaden knowledge and increase interest in different traditions and lifestyles. However, this is also one of the main reasons why local traditions and cultures are slowly disappearing.
Another major change can be seen in the way people communicate and express their ideas. Compared to earlier times, individuals today are much more willing to share their thoughts publicly, especially on digital platforms and social media. People now talk freely about social, political, and cultural issues, often reaching large audiences. This is an advantage, as open communication encourages awareness and social engagement. At the same time, quick and emotional reactions can replace thoughtful discussion, leading to misunderstandings. Conflicts may occur between those who support open expression and those who prefer more traditional ways of communication.
Social movements have also become more powerful. Movements related to women’ s rights, climate issues, and justice are developing with the help of the internet. These
movements create opportunities for effective change and increased awareness. People who could not share their opinions in the past now have platforms to influence others worldwide, sometimes pressuring governments to change outdated policies.
However, these developments also bring challenges. Online misinformation can sow confusion rather than unity, and people who oppose certain movements may feel excluded, deepening existing gaps rather than fixing them.
In conclusion, society is changing through cultural exchange, new communication styles, and stronger social movements. Although these changes may cause conflict, they also offer opportunities for inclusiveness, self-expression, and progress based on understanding and fairness among individuals and groups.
