An emerging technology that has been a topic of much controversy is Generative AI. There is debate over if the technology is ethical and if it could be considered art at all.
The main issue is how the data used in the creation of these images are collected. Artificial Intelligence needs a dataset to be trained on in order to produce the result a user wants. The dataset that is used to train these AIs consists of copyrighted images and actual work from talented artists that was taken without their consent. Social media companies have also started forcing this collection of data on their users. This threatens the jobs of many people who are working in creative industries such as graphic design. Companies have also started using AI art in advertising as a more cost affective alternative to hiring artists. An example of this would be the Coca-Cola Company who used AI art for their advertisements during the 2024 Christmas Season. The ad was poorly received and led to yet another debate about the ethics of AI art. This allows people to profit off of imitations of work that was done by actual artists.
This could be changed by improving our approach to artificial intelligence rather than designing them completely replace humans, we can design and use them to help make certain processes easier while not removing the required human input needed for these works.
Another risk that Generative AI Technologies posses is fraud and widespread misinformation. As the time goes on and artificial intelligence technologies become more advanced, people might start to use them with more malicious intent which could lead to the spread of lies and misinformation and the decrease of public trust to news agencies and media companies in general.
