The CEMP sets out the management actions required to either avoid, reduce, or mitigate negative construction-related impacts on the local environment. Ecosense provides an experienced environmental site manager who visits the site fortnightly and provides the construction team and municipality with feedback on compliance levels and recommendations for improvement where required. The Century City Square development was recently awarded a 4-Star Green Star – Custom Mixed-Use Design rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa— the first development in the Western Cape to achieve this.
What is a Green Star rating?
The Green Building Council of South Africa explains the criteria for its rating process. Green Star SA Rating Tools look at many categories to assess the environmental impact of a project’ s site selection, design, and construction. Points are awarded for each credit within an environmental category. A project cannot publicly claim a Green Star rating unless the Green Building Council of South Africa has certified the project. Green Star SA tools are developed using a consensus-based model, led by volunteer Technical Working Groups. Each rating tool has its own working group made up of technical experts and industry practitioners from the relevant market sector. Categories

Credits, weighting, and rating The categories are divided into specific credits for green building actions. All targeted credits in each category are assessed and a score is calculated. Green Star SA weighting factors are applied, and a Green Star SA rating is awarded. Around 70 – 80 % of the credits for each tool are core credits that are common to all tools. Weighting factors are specific to each different tool to reflect the distinct environmental concerns in different market sectors.
