Looking forward to
a new start
That Christmas
I spent time
dressed as an an-
gel. There was a
long line of white
draped angels
with tissue paper
wings and tinsel

halos on our hair.
We sang birthday
songs to baby Jesus. The golden light
from all the candles filled the church
and danced on the halos, sparking
light everywhere. Back in my bed, hug-
ging my new pillow, I watched the gate
light in the front yard. The whole eve-
ning was filled with light, no danger,
no violence...I felt calm and at peace.
My new pillow reminded me of my fos-
ter mother’s hugs — smooth and soft.

Her gift smelled of soap. When I
hugged it tight, I was safe. The light in
the dark yard gave me comfort, I was
safe. The Lord was watching over me.
Looking to the light, I fell asleep.
Gifts, no matter how mundane, can
be cherished by any child that has noth-
ing. It is a part of a new start. Boys and
Girls Aid Society is focused on Oregon’s
children and determined to give those
children a new start with hopeful gifts.
Boy and Girls Aid was assisted this
year by individual donations and a most
generous donation from the Rotary
Club of Wilsonville’s Foundation. Their
gift was instrumental in making the
Christmas Sports Bags Project a reality.
The gift allowed the volunteers at the
Cypress Branch, to stuff sports bags
with basketballs, socks, workout gear,
wallets with McDonald’s gift cards and
two dozen homemade cookies! We sup-
port our youth in foster care by provid-
ing the means to achieve a new life,
filled with positive activities and experi-
ences (from picnics, boys’ basketball
games and individual Easter Egg bas-
kets for the girls). Our efforts were en-
hanced this season by the amazing gift
from the Knights of Columbus: 60 new
warm coats! These wonderful people
are paying it forward.
The gifts from the Rotary Club of
Wilsonville and the Knights of Colum-
bus made the New Year for these chil-
dren. By their acts of generosity, Boys
and Girls Aid Society were able to give
joy, health and safety to our most deli-
cate of children.
Boys and Girls Aid is celebrating its
135th year in Oregon and the Cypress
Branch is celebrating 30 years and we
draw participants from all over the
North Willamette Valley. To find out
more about our programs, come to our
next luncheon, Jan. 16 at SpringRidge.
The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and
the cost is $15 at the door. If you are not a
member, but would like to attend, call
Cheri Sanville at 503-694-5826.
That year, the court put me back with
my parents. Mama burned my pillow.
