THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 19
February 2020
Sunshine Service
By JOAN VEDDER
Love can be felt in many
different aspects of life
Well February
is supposed to be
all about love and
I’m assuming that
each of you can
relate to some-
thing, or someone,
that makes that a
VEDDER
reality to you?
We love our par-
ents, our teachers, our spouse, our chil-
dren, maybe our pets, and/or our neigh-
bors? Love can also be about our sur-
roundings: a beautiful piece of music, a
fragrant flower garden, our favorite food.
It also brings to mind a rainbow, chil-
dren’s laughter, a fresh snowfall. I could
go on and on. You get the picture.
Something I had never thought much
about, became a focus in my life last
year: how little we appreciate good
health! It’s so easy to wake up each day
with no pain, no disease, no worries.
Loving life becomes simple. But there
might be a time when it doesn’t feel so
good and your happiness can wane into
sorrow.
2019 made it all so clear to me. It’s a
choice of how I can be grateful for some-
thing, anything, each day and thus fill
my heart with LOVE! The volunteer
work I do, corresponding with dear
friends, trying a new hobby: the chal-
lenges are endless.
Many of you will need the Sunshine
Service in 2020 to bring medical equip-
ment into your lives; hopefully on a tem-
porary basis! Our crew of volunteers
will LOVE helping you get back on your
feet. Last month I asked if anyone was
interested in joining Sunshine and I am
so happy to say that four people stepped
up. If you’d still like the chance to sign
up, give me a call. Your duties would not
begin until spring when CCC formulates
the new directory. In the meantime, we
will discuss how the system works. (It’s
very simple, believe me!)
So enjoy the month ahead and keep
track of all the things you love.

Join us for our upcoming
winter luncheons
February is one of our coldest
months, so it’s no wonder that Val-
entine’s Day evolved to fill a void
during this often dark and bleak
season. Historians have suggested
it evolved from a pagan fertility
celebration and over the centuries
it became definitively associated
with love. Some refer to it as a
“greeting card holiday,” and it is
indeed the second largest card-
sending holiday of the year after
Christmas.
February is also the month we cel-
ebrate presidential birthdays (al-
though it seems that President’s Day
has become as much an excuse for
mattress sales and a day off from
Kelly Rupp & Sharon Maynard
school as it is to remember George
and Abe). President’s Day might also
remind us of the presidents who
loved to play golf, most notably,
Dwight Eisenhower, whose golf
quote is one of my favorites: “It is a
sport in which the whole American
family can participate — fathers and
mothers, sons and daughters alike. It
offers healthy respite from daily toil,
refreshment of body and mind.”
His was certainly a passion for the
sport, one many of us share. Living
on a golf course reminds us daily of
the qualities of the sport, from the
beauty of the courses, to the camara-
derie we enjoy when we play with
friends and family. With winter in
full swing, we know we love golf, but
may have to wait for warmer days in
order to enjoy the “respite.” Mean-
while, we’re working hard to pre-
pare for the 2020 CWGA season here
at Charbonneau.
