THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 21 September 2019 Wilsonville Library By GREG MARTIN Several September events to choose from It’s September, and that means it’s “back to” month! Whether it’s back to school, back to work, or back MARTIN against the wall, the cavernous Wilson- ville Public Library most certainly has something of interest to you and yours this month! Here’s what’s happening in September on the adult side of the library: On Monday, Sept. 2, we will be closed in honor of Labor Day. “We’ll celebrate work by playing all day.” Here’s hoping you have something fun planned. If you miss us that day, you can call our automated renewal line at 503-659-8634, or just renew online. We’ll return promptly on Tuesday, Sept. 3. On Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. our First Friday Film program returns. This month, we’ll watch a comedy about a group of women who form a cheer-leading squad at their retire- ment community, proving that you’re never too old to bring it! Come on in and enjoy this free film with free snacks and free hard plastic chairs! It’s a new free class! Beginning Sun- day, Sept. 8, from 1:30-3 p.m. and con- tinuing through Sunday, Sept. 29, we present the Banned in America class, taught by Dr. Bill Thierfelder. Each September, the American Library As- sociation releases its list of the Top 10 challenged or banned books in our country. These bans and challenges (failed attempts at a ban) target not only literature, but other media as well — affecting DVDs, databases, dis- plays and art exhibits. This four-week course, examines the historical origins of censorship and banning and then explores some of the books and films currently on the ALA’s Top 10 list. The class is presented at no cost, but please sign up at the library, in person or by phone to reserve your seat. Do you know someone who would like to brush up on English skills? Please tell them about our English Conversation Group. Held on Monday evenings Sept. 9, 16, 23, and 30, begin- ning at 6 p.m., participants can drop in to learn and practice English in this free, informal class. Speakers of any language and any English comprehen- sive level are welcome, and no regis- tration is required. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m. our Great Books Discussion Group gathers. Are you interested in philosophy and the big questions of life? Join us each month for a roundtable discussion of how modern day issues are reflected and illuminated by the great Western classic books. This month, we’ll be dis- cussing The Republic by Plato. Call or email us to join our Great Books e- mailing list and receive monthly scans of (or links to) our readings. On Thursday, Sept. 12, come in for a presentation by local historian Sig Un- ander, Jr. on the West Coast Hurri- cane: The Columbus Day Storm. The greatest natural disaster to hit the re- gion, this extra-tropical cyclone dev- astated the Pacific Northwest in the fall of 1962. The widespread destruc- tion and long, costly recovery left memorable stories of survival and re- silience and important lessons for the future. Free, no sign-up required! On Saturday, Sept.14, at 2 p.m. visit us for our first Cabaret Variety Show! You Speak English, Don’t You? is a family-friendly, lively show that tells the true love story of a Czech-Ameri- can couple. Learn through song and dance how they met in Europe and eventually married, moved to the U.S. and made their living here. A question and answer session follows the perfor- mance, with one of the players, Hele- na, sharing what her life was like growing up behind the Iron Curtain and emigrating to the West. The Genealogy Club, meets again on Monday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. Join Ma- lia for helpful tips and tricks for all See LIBRARY / Page 22 Constance S .
