24 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER Charbonneau Women’s Association By LEE HARKER Remember to sign up for luncheons on time Our Aloha spirit Jackie and George Kadinha entertained 100 guests at HARKER our kickoff luncheon. Our buffet was complete with President’s Column Q From Page 2 October 2019 Oregon had been declared an American Territory in 1848 but it was not until 1853 for Washington. Thus, the scouts were sent north and selected the Willapa Bay region. Keil arrived with his first migration in 1855 but he did not like the weather or the isolation on the coastline and regrouped his people in Portland where he met some of the first 1847 emigrants who were by then bringing their apples and pears to the California market just one year after settling. Keil purchased a saw and a flour mill from these settlers in 1856 in the prairie region and he named the site Aurora Mills after his daughter. Courtesy to our caterers Our next luncheon program will be by Patrick Harris who has been the executive director and curator of the Aurora Colony Historical Society for over 25 years. He has also worked as the executive director of the Clackamas County Historical Society for nearly 10 years. The program titled “The Forty Eighters” will talk about the initial wave of settlers in our area, just ahead of the “Forty Niners” involved with the Gold Rush in California. The year 1847 was marked by major American emigration across the Oregon Trail including the transportation of fruit seeds and starts which were soon planted in the French Prairie region of the Willamette Valley. In 1853 William Keil sent 10 scouts from Missouri who arrived at the then American controlled Fort Vancouver. ment of time, for not only our volunteer Board, but also for the entire CCC staff, takes much dedication. We are fortu- nate here in Charbonneau to have a staff that continues to be positive and meet every new challenge with a smile and usually some very good in- sights. Going forward, we are anticipating that only one regu- lar monthly meeting will be necessary. We have, however, moved those meetings to the first Tuesday of each month and the time has been changed to 2 p.m. The Villager, which is our main avenue of communi- cation with our community, has a deadline of the 10th of each month. By moving our Board meetings to the first Tuesday we will be able to report to our community in a more timely manner. This date change be- gins in November. Our October meeting will be 2 p.m. Oct. 8. “Listen! The wind is rising and the air is wild with leaves, we have had our summer eve- nings, now for October eves.” — Humbert Wolfe authentic Hawaiian food. It looked like a tropical garden in the CCC dining room with the majority of the members wearing floral and Hawaiian clothing despite the cool rainy weather outside. The music brought back wonderful memories for the audience, most of whom had been to Hawaii at some point. Two of our members did the hula — hidden talent in our group! Transition into fall Everyone was reminded to sign up for the luncheons on time (noon the preceding Thursday). Our Treasurer Lindy Anderson graciously offered to take phone reservations for members that are out of town and cannot possibly bring in their checks prior to noon on Thursday. Free lunch Members who had signed up by Aug. 31 were eligible for a drawing for a free luncheon. The five winners were Lindy Anderson, Debbie Bray, Claudia DeVries, Rosemary Ricken and Leslie Walker.
