THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 7 May 2019 Anne Shevlin ■ From Page 4 Shevlin moved to Charbonneau in 2012 from Southern Oregon with her husband, Bill. “We jumped into the community right away by getting involved in lots of activities,” she said. “We chose Charbonneau because even though we didn’t know anyone in the immediate area, we would be able to make a lot of friends and get involved in our community.” Since planting a permanent home in the tight-knit community, Shevlin has served on several boards in the community, including individual homeowners associations, the Women’s Association and Boys and Girls Aid-Cypress Auxiliary, which supports children in foster care. In her professional career, Shevlin worked as a registered nurse at Rogue Valley Medical Center for 10 years before switching lanes and doing administrative work for the hospital for 20 years. “It was a great career,” Shevlin said. “I loved it and that’s why I chose to do my volunteer work with Boys and Girls Aid. I took care of children and families that were having challenges and difficulties so I wanted to give back to that when I retired.” Shevlin has also served on committees like her own HOA and the committee for the women’s golf club. “There’s so many opportunities in Charbonneau,” she said. “We love the community. We hope to stay here and age in place as long as we can. We were attracted to Charbonneau by the golf course and the other activities that are available for active people.” One hot topic Shevlin would tackle if elected to the CCC Board is upgrading buildings in the Charbonneau Village Center. “The buildings are older. They don’t fit the needs of the growing community,” Shevlin said. “It’s an older physical plan that requires more space and upgrading, even the technology. Just to be able to get online is a challenge, so I’d like to be part of the development of Charbonneau going into the future.” ■ ROOF MASTERS INC. By CARLYNE LYNCH, FOR THE VILLAGER Real Estate Today with Lynda Huber Selecting a Contractor Whether you’re putting your home on the market this year or in the next fi ve years, it is a smart decision to start building your home’s resale value now. Neglecting small Your Charbonneau maintenance and re- Neighbor in Real Estate pairs causes your home value to be low- er than you might expect. Most appraisers claim that homes showing little to no preventative maintenance can depreciate from $15,000 to $20,000. Be careful of using Craigslist or other on line sourc- es. And always avoid contractors who solicit door to door. The best way for a successful home improvement or repair project is to know your contractor. Be sure they are licensed with the state. Talk with your trust- ed friends, family, or neighbors for recommendations. Check with people in the construction or related in- dustries that you know. You can also check with rep- utable associations such as the National Association of Remodeling Industry. As a Real Estate Broker I am familiar with projects that will help retain your value. If you think you might want to remodel or renovate your home in the near fu- ture, feel free to give me a call. I would love to meet with you to discuss your projects. Expect that a good contractor will be busy and un- able to start immediately. Be cautious if they request a large down payment. Ask them for references and check them out. Verify their license on the Contractor Board Web site www.oregon.gov/CCB or call 503-378-4621. The CCB web site contains more information as well as a Consumer Guide and a Buyer Beware list for con- tractors who owe money to homeowners or to the state of Oregon for unpaid fi nes.
