ODE TO GOLF by Allan Berman
“It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies,
And even disappears before my eyes.
Often it will have a
whim,
To hit a tree or take a
swim.
With miles of grass
on which to land,
It finds a tiny patch
of sand.
Then has me offering up my soul,
If only it would find the hole.
It’s made me whimper like a pup,
And swear that I will give it up.
And take to drink to ease my sorrow,
But the ball knows ...
I’ll be back tomorrow.”
I must love this game!
A group of brave and dedicated
couples, led by John and Diane Meyers,
played “Nine on New Year’s Day.” The
Red course was closed, the Green course
was still “frosty” on the greens, but the
Yellow course was clear of frost. The sun
was high and bright, and the temperature
was low and cold in the shade. Winter
coats stayed on most of the round. No
one recorded a score; winning was
finishing. Afterwards, the group ate
wonderful warm homemade soups,
appetizers and warming drinks to
celebrate the new year. Through the day,
people kept saying “I must love this
game.”
For those of our members who stayed
here in Charbonneau, January was a
time of dodging bad weather in order to
get in a round of golf. We are waiting for
our snow birds to return from warmer
climates and begin our scheduled golf
season of events in April. Be sure to read
about the educational and social events
planned in the next few months to help
you be prepared to start the season
strong at April’s Season Tee Off
Breakfast and Golf event.
Website Updates target Mobile Devices
The Men’s Club Officers and
Committee Chairs are dedicated to using
the website as the best and quickest
source of information for our members.
Please use it and tell us how to make it
better. We will also continue to use
printed materials in the Pro Shop and
Club Room, as well as the printed
directory and event flyers as we have in
the past.
The Men’s Club website has
undergone major changes over the
winter months. The basic structure was
modified to adjust to the increasing use of
mobile devices (i.e. phones, tablets and
laptops) to access the most popular
website pages. Most web pages will now
adjust to the width of the mobile device,
without a significant reduction in the size
of the text and images. This should make
it easier for our members to access
information about GOLF events and
MEMBERS profiles. The web pages have
been organized by the following major
MENU selections:
GOLF: everything about our events —
information about 18 hole and 9 hole
event dates, times, games, local rules and
results at the end of the competitions.
Major calendar of events and
leaderboards of the season-long
competitions will also be found here (e.g.
Charbonneau Cup, Most Improved
Golfer, Hole In One).
NEWS: all the NEWS posts we’ve sent
you throughout the year 2019 will be
found here.
MEMBERS: everything about our
members — latest handicap revisions,
member contact information (Phone#,
email) and a new section “Photo Gallery
of Friendly Faces” where you can match
the name of a golfer with his picture.
ADMIN: everything about our
business operation — information about
the board of directors, bylaws, policies
and rules, and business operations.
Try visiting the website with your
desktop, laptop and mobile device.
Explore the menu and information noted
above. Our club’s website is located at:
http://mc.golfcharbonneau.com.
Give us feedback and suggestions for
making it even better.
SEND US YOUR PHOTO for the
Gallery of Friendly Faces.
Over the past few years, many
members of the club have suggested that
the Board of Directors should take the
initiative to add photos of members to go
along with the Member Directory. There
are many times that a member can’t
remember a name that goes with a face,
